Office Chair Cylinder Removal

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair cylinder removal can be achieved through the pressing method, tapping method, rotation method, inverted tapping/rotation removal method, and sitting upright extraction method. The specific operations are as follows:

Pressing Method

Place the chair upside down and ensure it is stable. Clear the operating space below the base. Observe the inside of the connection between the gas lift and the base, and locate the metal snap ring embedded in the groove. Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver, the tip of tweezers, or a ballpoint pen shell with the refill removed) to align with the gap or both sides of the snap ring and gently press inward. A 'click' sound indicates that the snap ring has been released. After maintaining the pressing or confirming that the snap ring is released, use your hand to steadily pull up the gas lift to separate it from the base.

Tapping Method

Place the chair upside down or on its side on a stable ground. Use a rubber mallet (preferred) or an ordinary hammer wrapped in a thick towel to evenly and moderately tap around the metal ring connecting the gas lift to the base (or seat) to avoid concentrated tapping at one point. After tapping a few circles, hold the gas lift or the base with one hand, continue tapping the connection with the other hand, and at the same time, try to pull it upward or shake it slightly left and right. If the connection is too tight, you can first apply lubricating oil (such as WD - 40) to the connection gap and let it fully penetrate for 1 - 2 hours before tapping.

Rotation Method

Apply lubricating oil to the threaded connection to increase lubricity. Use a pipe wrench (10-inch or 14-inch) or a locking pliers to firmly grip the metal part of the gas rod (as close to the connection as possible). Rotate it counterclockwise with force (usually a reverse-thread). At the same time, you can use your other hand or foot to hold the seat steady until the gas lift is unscrewed. This method is very likely to leave obvious marks on the smooth surface of the gas rod and is only recommended when you plan to replace the gas rod.

Inverted Tapping/Rotation Removal Method

Invert the chair to ensure that the gas rod is facing upward and the chair is stable without sliding. Wear gloves during operation to prevent injury. Use a wrench to unscrew the fixing screws connecting the base and the gas rod counterclockwise and keep the screws properly. After that, you can choose the tapping method or the rotation method to separate the gas rod.

Sitting Upright Extraction Method (Suitable for adjustable-height models)

Face the chair directly, step on the five-star base with your feet, pull the height adjustment lever upward and hold it, and at the same time, raise the chair to the highest position (do not release the lever throughout the process). Hold both sides of the chair with your hands and adjust the degree of force according to the years of use (the longer the use, the more force is required). Shake it slightly left and right and pull out the gas rod upward.

Precautions: Do not use brute force to dismantle it to avoid deformation of the base or damage to the gas rod. If the gas rod has air leakage, deformation, or severe rust, it is recommended to directly replace it with a new part instead of forcibly repairing it.
