Office Chair Cylinder Not Rising
Admin October 10, 2026
The main reason for an office chair cylinder not rising is the failure of the gas spring, which may also involve issues with other mechanical structures or the cylinder itself. These problems can be resolved through troubleshooting and repair.

Fault Causes
- Gas Spring Issues: Worn or aged seals leading to poor airtightness; nitrogen leakage resulting in insufficient pressure; internal blockage due to impurities; the gas spring being locked at the lowest position due to impacts during transportation of a new chair.
- Other Mechanical Structure Issues: Stuck or damaged levers or knobs controlling the lifting and lowering; loose or broken connections between the five-star base or chassis; damaged internal mechanical springs.
- Cylinder-Related Issues: Worn piston rod seals or guide sleeves; insufficient air pressure, blocked air supply lines, or incorrect adjustment of the pressure regulator; impurities in the cylinder output gap; malfunctioning distributors; oil contamination blocking control valves; leakage of retaining elements; poor quality of the distributor valve leading to unstable operation due to temperature rise; loose or severely worn adjustment parts of the control speed regulator; improper fit or deformation and rusting of moving parts; harsh usage environments with excessive dust.
Troubleshooting and Repair Steps
- Precise Fault Troubleshooting: Repeatedly press and rotate the lifting control button/lever to feel for any sticking or lack of resistance; attempt to lift and lower the chair while listening for abnormal hissing air leaks or metal friction sounds; check for any wobbling or unusual noises at the connections between the chair base and the underside of the seat.
- Safely Remove the Old Gas Spring: Turn the chair upside down on a stable surface and raise it as high as possible; use a rubber mallet to gently and evenly tap around the connection between the bottom of the gas spring and the steel ring of the chassis, then tap around the four sides of the connection between the top and the bottom plate of the seat.
- Purchase and Replace with a New Gas Spring: Search for relevant products on e-commerce platforms, paying attention to size compatibility, safety certifications, and load-bearing capacity; insert the new gas spring into the center hole of the base, press the seat straight down with force until it is fully inserted, and installation is complete when you hear a clicking sound or feel a tight fit.
- Other Handling Methods: Ensure sufficient air pressure; check and adjust the position of the cylinder valve; sit on the chair and lift the seat with your hands while stepping on the base with your feet; if there are impurities in the cylinder, remove and wipe it clean; if the distributor is faulty, clean, repair, or replace it; if the oil is contaminated, clean it and add good hydraulic oil; if the retaining element is leaking, inspect and repair it; if there are issues with the control speed regulator, overhaul and maintain it; if there are problems with the moving parts, inspect and maintain them; if the usage environment is harsh, strengthen protection and perform regular dust removal and lubrication.
