Office Chair Cylinder Disassembly

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair cylinder disassembly can be achieved through the pressing method, tapping method, rotating method, or the sitting-straight pull-out method. The appropriate method should be selected based on the cylinder's condition, and safety regulations must be strictly followed.

1. Pressing Method (Preferred Universal Method)

  1. Preparation and Fixation: Invert the chair and place it on a stable base, ensuring the area beneath is clear for operation.
  2. Locate the Snap Ring: Observe the inner side of the connection between the gas lift and the base to find the metal snap ring embedded in the groove (usually circular or C-shaped).
  3. Press to Unlock: Use a slender tool (such as a small flat-head screwdriver, the tip of tweezers, or a ballpoint pen shell with the ink cartridge removed) to gently press inward on the gap or both sides of the snap ring. A clicking sound indicates that the snap ring has been released.
  4. Separate Components: While maintaining pressure or confirming that the snap ring is released, use your hand to steadily pull the gas lift upward to separate it from the base.
Applicable Scenarios: This method is suitable for cylinders with snap rings that are not rusted and have a normal structure, offering simple operation with no risk of damage.

2. Tapping Method (Suitable for Seized or Structurally Failed Cylinders)

  1. Secure the Chair: Invert or place the chair on its side on a stable surface to prevent it from sliding during operation.
  2. Tap Evenly: Use a rubber mallet or a regular hammer wrapped in a thick towel to tap evenly around the metal ring connecting the gas lift to the base, avoiding concentrated tapping on a single point to prevent deformation.
  3. Attempt Separation: After tapping a few rounds, hold the gas lift or base with one hand while continuing to tap the connection with the other hand, and simultaneously attempt to pull upward or shake slightly left and right. If the connection is too tight, apply lubricating oil (such as WD-40) to the gap and let it sit for 1-2 hours before tapping again.
Applicable Scenarios: This method is suitable for situations where the snap ring has failed or the gas lift and base have become adhered due to long-term use.

3. Rotating Method (Suitable for Seized Threaded Connections)

  1. Apply Lubrication: Apply lubricating oil to the threaded connection to reduce friction.
  2. Clamp and Rotate: Use a pipe wrench or locking pliers to clamp the metal part of the gas rod (as close to the connection as possible) without damaging the surface.
  3. Apply Force and Rotate: Rotate counterclockwise with force (usually reverse-threaded), while using the other hand or foot to stabilize the chair seat until the gas lift is unscrewed.
Note: This method may leave clamp marks and should only be used as a last resort. Ensure that there is no residual high-pressure gas in the gas rod.

4. Sitting-Straight Pull-Out Method (Suitable for Adjustable-Height Models)

  1. Adjust the Height: Face the chair directly, step on the five-star base with your feet, pull the height adjustment lever upward and hold it, while simultaneously raising the chair to its highest position (do not release the lever throughout the process).
  2. Shake and Pull Out: Grasp both sides of the chair with your hands, adjust the force according to the years of use, shake slightly left and right, and pull the gas rod upward. Ensure that the five-star base is firmly fixed during operation to prevent slipping and falling.

General Safety Tips

  • Avoid Brute Force: Prevent deformation of the chassis or damage to the gas rod, especially avoid directly tapping the top of the gas rod with a hammer.
  • High-Pressure Risk: If the gas rod has air leaks, deformation, or severe rust, it is recommended to replace it with a new one directly instead of forcing a repair.
  • Inspection and Maintenance: After disassembly, check if the gas rod is intact. If there are air leaks, cracks, or abnormal noises, replace it immediately. When reinstalling, ensure that the screws are tightened and test the stability of the lifting and rotating functions.
