Office Chair Cylinder Damage
Admin October 09, 2026
The following steps can be taken to deal with office chair cylinder damage, while paying attention to the causes of the fault and safety precautions:

I. Maintenance Steps
- Remove the Base: Place the office chair on a level surface. Use a screwdriver or other tools to remove the base fixed under the seat. Then, lay the chair on its side and place a soft object (such as a foam block) beside it to prevent rolling.
- Inspect the Cylinder: Refer to the manufacturer's manual to identify the faulty part. Check the cylinder surface for cracks, whether the piston is stuck, and whether the seal ring is aged. If small parts (such as the seal ring) need to be replaced, use pliers to grip the gas cylinder tube and slowly loosen the cylinder. If it does not come off, repeat the operation, but do not forcefully disassemble it.
- Purchase a New Cylinder: Go to a regular hardware store or the brand's after-sales service center. Buy a matching product according to the original cylinder model (such as size and pressure rating) to avoid using counterfeit and shoddy parts.
- Install the New Cylinder: Align the new cylinder with the hole at the bottom of the seat, press it gently until it is fully inserted, reassemble the base, and tighten all the bolts with a wrench. Adjust the seat height to a comfortable position and test whether the lifting function works properly.
II. Analysis of Fault Causes
- Hydraulic and Pneumatic Problems: Long-term use can lead to aging of the seal ring or gas leakage, resulting in insufficient air pressure.
- Internal Cylinder Damage: Wear or breakage of parts such as the piston and seal ring directly affects the lifting function.
- Faults in Other Parts: Small problems such as loose connectors, a stuck piston, and a failed spring can cause abnormal lifting.
- Improper Operation: Behaviors such as excessive adjustment of the air pressure, frequent use of the extreme height, and long-term lack of maintenance can accelerate cylinder wear.
- Safety Hazards: Improper air pressure adjustment or damaged sealing can lead to excessive internal pressure. Thinning of the cylinder wall and aging of the seal ring can increase the risk of explosion.
III. Precautions
- Safety First: If you are not familiar with the maintenance process, it is recommended to contact a professional for operation to avoid cylinder explosion or hydraulic oil splashing.
- Regular Inspection: Check the gas purity (which should be โฅ90%) and sealing of the gas spring every six months, and replace aging parts in a timely manner.
- Alternative Solutions: If the cylinder is completely damaged and the chair frame is intact, you can buy matching seat parts separately for replacement. If the maintenance cost is too high, you can directly buy a new chair, giving priority to products that have passed safety certifications such as BIFMA.
