Office Chair Cylinder
The office chair cylinder is the core component in pneumatic lift chairs that enables height adjustment of the seat, and its structure, specifications, safety, and maintenance require special attention.

Structure and Working Principle
The office chair cylinder is primarily composed of a gas spring (gas lift cylinder) and an outer shell. One end of the gas lift cylinder is connected to the bottom of the seat, while the piston end is fixed inside the steel outer shell. A small push valve is located at the top, controlled by a height adjustment lever. Its working principle is based on the pressure difference created by compressed air: the cylinder is filled with pressurized nitrogen gas. When the piston moves, the internal pressure is altered by adjusting the control valve, enabling the seat to rise or lower. Nitrogen, as an inert gas, is chemically stable, non-flammable, and non-explosive, making it a commonly used filling gas in legitimate products.
Size Specifications and Load-Bearing Matching
The outer diameter of the cylinder is a key parameter for distinguishing the load-bearing capacity of office chairs:
- Small leisure chairs with a load capacity of โค80kg: The outer diameter of the cylinder is mostly 28-32 millimeters, suitable for lightweight usage scenarios.
- Ordinary home/office chairs with a load capacity of 80-150kg: The outer diameter of the cylinder is mostly 32-40 millimeters, covering most daily office needs.
- Gaming chairs or commercial chairs with a load capacity of >150kg: The outer diameter of the cylinder is mostly 40-45 millimeters, requiring higher strength for use. When selecting, it is necessary to match the specifications according to the user's weight and frequency of use to avoid overloading and damaging the cylinder.
Safety Risks and Prevention
Poor-quality gas lift rods or insufficient gas purity are the main safety hazards:
- Explosion risk: Poor-quality products may be filled with oxygen or mixed gases. Under frequent lifting and lowering, high-temperature environments, or external impacts, the internal pressure can suddenly increase, leading to cylinder rupture or even explosion, which has caused multiple serious injury accidents.
- Legitimate product protection: Cylinders that have passed safety certifications use high-purity nitrogen gas and are equipped with pressure release devices to effectively mitigate risks. When purchasing, look for 3C certification or international standards (such as BIFMA).
Maintenance and Repair Methods
If the seat sinks, temporary repairs can be made using the following methods:
- Hose clamp method: Adjust the chair to the desired height, wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder, and tighten it to fix the piston position with external force.
- PVC pipe method: Measure the diameter and length of the cylinder, purchase a matching PVC pipe, saw it lengthwise, and slip it over the cylinder, using the pipe's friction to restrict piston movement. Note: The above methods are only temporary solutions. For long-term use, replace with an original cylinder. Avoid violent lifting and lowering or prolonged exposure to high temperatures during daily use to extend the cylinder's lifespan.
The performance of the office chair cylinder directly affects usage safety and comfort. Choosing legitimate products and performing regular maintenance are crucial.
