Office Chair Cycling

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chair cycling is a 'hidden fat-burning' exercise that can be done at your workstation, helping you make use of fragmented time for physical activity.

There are two common ways to do office chair cycling. The first specific method is as follows: Keep your back about two fists' distance away from the chair back. This distance ensures that your body has enough space to move while maintaining a good sitting posture. Hold the sides of the seat tightly with both hands to keep your body balanced and prevent falling due to body swaying during the exercise. Raise your right knee to the level of your hip. At this point, you can clearly feel your abdominal muscles being stretched. At the same time, press down hard with your left heel. Through this coordinated movement of the upper and lower limbs, activate your abdominal muscles. Then alternate between your left and right legs. Throughout the process, imagine that you are pedaling a stationary bike, but be sure to keep the amplitude within the concealed space under your desk to avoid affecting your normal work or bumping into surrounding objects.

The second method is the 'cycling' air-pedaling movement: Sit on the office chair and hold the sides of the chair with both hands to fix your body. Keep your waist and back straight. This is a very important posture requirement because a straight waist and back can ensure that your spine is in its normal physiological curvature and reduce the risk of spine injury during exercise. Lift your legs and bend your knees at a 90-degree angle to simulate the starting position of cycling. Then extend your left leg forward and bend your right leg back. Alternate between your left and right legs. The movements should be slow and powerful. Slow movements allow your muscles to be exercised more fully, and power ensures the effectiveness of the exercise. Do 30 repetitions for each side. Through such repeated movements, you can effectively exercise your leg muscles and also move your waist and abdominal muscles to a certain extent.

Office chair cycling is a great exercise option for office workers who sit for long periods. It does not require additional space or equipment and can be done during work breaks. It can relieve, to a certain extent, the physical fatigue caused by prolonged sitting, promote blood circulation, and enhance muscle strength. However, when doing this exercise, pay attention to the standardization and moderation of the movements to avoid body injuries caused by improper exercise.
