Whitening of Office Chair Cushions

Admin October 17, 2026

The treatment method for whitening of office chair cushions should be selected based on the material and the cause of whitening. Common situations and solutions are as follows:

I. Whitening of Velvet Cushions

  1. Physical friction causing pile flattening
If the whitened area shows signs of pile collapse and disordered direction, it is usually caused by long-term friction leading to pile flattening. To repair, use a steam iron to spray steam in thin layers from a distance of 20-30 centimeters from the cushion, then use a soft-bristled brush to comb the pile direction after natural drying. For daily prevention, regularly remove dust with a soft-bristled brush or vacuum cleaner to avoid secondary damage caused by particle friction.

  2. Improper cleaning or moisture causing fiber damage
If the whitened area is accompanied by hardening or stiffening, it may be due to improper use of cleaning agents or moisture causing fiber breakage. Repair requires two steps: first, use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristled brush attachment to remove loose dust, then use a slightly damp soft cloth to wipe in the direction of the pile; if there are stains, use a dedicated velvet cleaning agent to gently brush the stained area, absorb residual cleaning agent with a damp towel, and dry in a cool, ventilated place. Prevention involves avoiding the use of alkaline or strongly corrosive cleaning agents and maintaining a dry environment.

  3. Long-term sun exposure or oxidation causing fading
If the color uniformly lightens and covers a large area, it is usually due to long-term ultraviolet exposure causing pigment decomposition. Such fading requires professional automotive interior repair services to restore color through touch-ups or spraying protective agents. Self-operation may lead to color discrepancies or material damage due to insufficient technical skills. Prevention involves installing sunshades above the cushion or using UV-blocking window films.

II. Whitening of Plastic Cushions

  1. Surface oxidation layer causing whitening
Plastic surfaces can form a white oxidation layer due to oxidation. This can be removed by squeezing white toothpaste onto a soft cloth and rubbing in circles, then rinsing with water and drying; or by lightly wiping the whitened area with 75% medical alcohol and then drying with a cloth to prevent brittleness. Prevention involves avoiding prolonged direct sunlight and maintaining a dry storage environment.

  2. Stubborn stains or mold causing whitening
If whitening is caused by stains or mold, use diluted bleach (1 part bleach + 10 parts water) to gently wipe the stained area, rinse with water after 5 minutes, and dry thoroughly. Note: This method is only suitable for uncoated plastics and requires strict control of concentration and time to avoid material corrosion.

  3. Aging causing oil loss
Plastic aging can lead to oil loss and loss of luster. This can be restored through a flame refinishing method: heat the surface with a torch to allow deep-seated oils to resurface. However, this method requires professional operation as improper temperature control can easily lead to plastic deformation or burning. It is recommended to contact a repair technician for handling.

III. Whitening of Sponge Cushions

Sponge materials (such as latex sponges) are usually whitened using brighteners, and normal aging does not easily cause whitening. If whitening occurs, it may be due to stains or mold and requires treatment with cleaning agents; if the material ages and becomes brittle or collapses, it is recommended to directly replace the cushion.

General advice: If the material or cause of whitening cannot be determined, or if the cushion is made of precious materials (such as genuine leather, carbon fiber, etc.), it is recommended to contact a professional agency for handling to avoid irreversible damage caused by improper operation.
