Office Chair Cushion Tutorial

Admin October 16, 2026

Refer to the following tutorial for making or modifying office chair cushions, which is divided into three directions: selecting finished products, modifying old chairs, and making cushion covers by yourself:

I. Key Points for Selecting Finished Lumbar Support Cushions If you need to purchase finished products directly, pay close attention to the following characteristics:

  1. Support: High-quality lumbar support cushions should fit the curve of your back, providing a soft yet stable support that automatically guides your spine to straighten when you sit down, preventing your lumbar spine from hanging in the air.
  2. Core Material: Prioritize high-elasticity memory foam or eco-friendly polyurethane. These materials have strong resilience, are less likely to collapse after prolonged use, and can shape according to your weight and body temperature, evenly distributing the pressure on your buttocks to the ischial region.
  3. Breathable Design: For summer use, choose cushions with breathable holes or mesh structures to prevent heat buildup and sweating, keeping your waist and buttocks dry.
  4. Ergonomic Design: Avoid cushions made solely of soft sponge; they should have an ergonomic curve or zoned support structure, such as a raised waist or recessed buttocks design.

II. Steps for Modifying Old Office Chair Cushions Refer to the method for modifying dining chair cushions, suitable for replacing damaged cushions or upgrading comfort:

  1. Remove Old Structure:
    • Unscrew the chair seat from the base (usually by turning the screws counterclockwise) and save the screws for later installation.
    • Use the back of a hammer or a specialized tool to remove the thumbtacks or staples securing the fabric, and discard the old filling (such as hay or fabric mixture).
    • Check if the seat base is damaged. If replacement is needed, purchase an adapter base or cut a multi-layer board to size for fixation.
  2. Install New Padding and Dust Cover:
    • Cut the dust cover fabric: Cut according to the seat size, leaving a 2-3 cm margin. Fix it from the center outward with staples, ensuring the fabric is taut and wrinkle-free.
    • Cut the foam pad: Choose a 2-inch (about 5 cm) thick foam, trace the seat frame, and cut it. The edges should exceed the back of the seat by 2 inches for fixation.
    • Secure the padding: Place the foam pad and seat on the padding fabric, centered. Cut off excess padding, pull it tight from the center outward, and staple it to the back of the seat. Fold the staples at the corners for fixation.

III. Process for Making Fabric Cushion Covers by Yourself Suitable for situations where you already have a foam pad but need to replace the outer cover:

  1. Cut the Fabric: Place the foam on the back of the fabric, trace it with a rubber eraser, and cut it. Leave a 1 cm margin at the seams (more if the fabric is prone to shrinkage).
  2. Make Side Fabric Strips: Prepare 6 cm wide fabric strips with a length equal to the cushion's circumference. Mark and sew the seams.
  3. Sew the Main Body: Start from the short side of the cushion, sew the fabric strip face-to-face with the foam, folding the fabric strip at the corners to fit the curve.
  4. Fill and Seal: After sewing around, secure the other fabric piece. Start sewing from 5 cm of the short side, fill with foam without leaving gaps, sew three folds at the unsewn part, and install buttons.
  5. Add Fixing Straps: Make two straps from 4 cm ร— 50 cm fabric strips, fold them in half, sew them, and fix them to the back of the cushion for easy attachment to the chair.
