Office Chair Cushion Removal

Admin October 09, 2026

The method for removing the cushion of an office chair should be selected according to the type of chair. Details are as follows:

I. Adjustable-height Office Chairs

  1. Tool Preparation: Rubber mallet, Phillips screwdriver, adjustable wrench, gloves, safety goggles (optional). Place the chair on a stable surface or soft mat.
  2. Separating the Base from the Gas Cylinder: Turn the chair upside down so that the wheeled five-star base faces upwards. Use the rubber mallet to evenly strike the metal base plate at the connection between the base and the gas cylinder. At the same time, use your hands or feet to assist inๆŽฐๅŠจ (this can be translated as 'prying' or 'twisting') the five-star base. Repeat the operation until the gas cylinder is separated.
  3. Separating the Cushion from the Gas Cylinder:
    • Removing the Base Plate: Use the screwdriver to unscrew the fixing screws of the plastic or metal base plate at the bottom of the cushion and remove the base plate.
    • Striking to Loosen: Use the rubber mallet to strike the metal base plate at the connection between the bottom of the cushion and the gas cylinder. Hold the gas cylinder steady with one hand, strike with the other hand, or use your foot to step on the chair for auxiliary fixation. Use the vibration to separate the two.
    • Shaking Method: Raise the gas cylinder to the highest position. Hold the cushion with one hand and press the lifting lever with the other hand to release the lock. At the same time, shake the cushion vigorously from side to side.

II. Ordinary Office Chairs

  1. Tool Preparation: Phillips or flat-head screwdriver, wrench. Move the chair to a flat surface.
  2. Finding the Connection Points: Observe the connection method between the cushion and the chair. The screws are usually hidden at the bottom of the cushion or under the chair frame. You need to turn the chair over or lift the dust cover to find them.
  3. Removing the Screws: Use the screwdriver to rotate counterclockwise to remove the screws. If the screws are rusted or too tight, you can spray lubricant to help loosen them.
  4. Dealing with Snap-fit Fixings: If the cushion is fixed by snap fasteners, use a flat tool (such as a plastic pry bar) to gently pry the edges of the snap fasteners. Avoid using excessive force to damage the frame. Save all the screws and accessories.

III. Handling Special Cases

  1. Chairs without Base Plate Screws: First, loosen the base plate screws (skip if there are none). Lift the chair so that the chair legs are in the air. Use a rubber mallet to strike the chair legs from top to bottom until the rubber joints are loosened, and then remove the gas rod.
  2. IKEA Office Chairs:
    • Removing the Casters: Turn the chair upright and pull the wheels directly by hand. If they cannot be pulled, use a screwdriver to hold the edge of the wheel, lay the chair horizontally, and use both hands toๅคนไฝ (this can be translated as 'grip') the wheel from top to bottom. Use the lower hand to apply force toๆŽฐ (this can be translated as 'pry').
    • Separating the Gas Cylinder from the Base: Turn the chair upside down. Use the rubber mallet to strike around the steel ring at the bottom of the chair legs. Try to pull out the gas cylinder. If it is stuck, hold the gas cylinder with one hand and use an iron hammer to lightly strike the base plate in a circular motion. Or apply cooking oil for lubrication and let it stand for 1-2 hours.
