Office Chair Cushion Odor
Admin October 16, 2026
The odor from office chair cushions is mainly related to material quality or usage habits and can be improved through ventilation, adsorption, plant purification, and other methods.

Main Causes of Odor
- Material Issues: Some cushions are made of "sponge waste" (recycled sponge) bonded with glue. This type of material may retain pungent odors and is prone to exceeding safe levels of harmful substances like formaldehyde and benzene. Recycled sponge is reformed from discarded foam through chemical treatment, with a loose internal structure that easily absorbs and releases volatile organic compounds, leading to noticeable odors shortly after use.
- Usage Habits: Over time, cushions can become contaminated by sweat, sebum secretion, or frequent flatulence. Sulfur compounds and ammonia in human waste, combined with bacterial decomposition products, create strong and persistent odors.
Targeted Solutions
- Ventilation: After receiving a new chair, wipe the surface dust with a damp cloth and place it in a well-ventilated area (such as a balcony or near a window) to air out for 1-2 days. For stronger odors, keep windows and doors open to accelerate air circulation and prevent odor buildup in enclosed spaces.
- Adsorption and Purification: Place bamboo charcoal bags or activated carbon boxes near the cushion to absorb harmful gases like formaldehyde and benzene using their porous structures. Bamboo charcoal should be sun-dried regularly (every 1-2 weeks) to restore its adsorption capacity and prevent secondary release when saturated.
- Plant Assistance: Use green plants like spider plants, aloe vera, or snake plants, whose leaves can absorb some volatile organic compounds while releasing oxygen through photosynthesis to improve local air quality. Note that plant purification efficiency is low and should only be used as a supplementary method.
- Odor Masking: Lightly spray the cushion with lemon or lavender-scented perfume to mask odors with aromatic molecules. Choose perfumes extracted from natural plants to avoid complex or irritating odors from chemical fragrances mixing with the original smell.
If the odor persists and is accompanied by symptoms like dizziness or eye irritation, be alert for formaldehyde exceedance. It is recommended to contact the seller for a replacement cushion that meets national standards or commission a professional agency to test indoor air quality.
