Office Chair Cushion Handmade

Admin October 09, 2026

There are mainly three handmade methods for making office chair cushions, and you can choose the appropriate one according to the materials and needs:

1. Repurposing Old Clothes into Cushions This method is suitable for using idle clothes. The steps are as follows:

  • Cutting the Fabric: Cut off the sleeves and edges of the old clothes. Fold the large pieces in half, use a ruler to draw lines, and cut them into rectangular squares for later use.
  • Joining Fabric Strips: Cut the fabric pieces into strips about 15 centimeters wide. Join them into long strips by sewing or tying. You can mix fabric pieces of different colors such as black and red to enhance the visual effect.
  • Filling and Sewing: Measure and cut a 40-centimeter-long strip segment. Sew the ends together and turn it inside out. Cut the remaining fabric into scraps and mix them with cotton batting to fill the strip. Sew the opening shut. Finally, sew multiple filled segments together in an 'over-under' pattern to form the cushion body and decorate the edges with black lace.

2. Square Fabric Cushion This method requires square fabric and fabric strips. The steps are as follows:

  • Preparing the Strips: Fold the edges of the fabric strips about 1 centimeter and iron them flat. Sew them in place with a sewing machine to prevent fraying.
  • Attaching the Strips: On the large piece of fabric, measure a 2-centimeter margin and lay the strips flat. Secure them with pins and sew the joints of the strips.
  • Sewing and Turning: Lay another piece of fabric flat, leaving an opening of about 5 centimeters unsewn at the edge. Mark a 15-centimeter area in the middle (which does not need to be sewn). Sew the remaining edges and cut off the four corners (to reduce the thickness when turning inside out). Turn the fabric right side out through the opening and iron it flat.
  • Filling and Closing: Fold the four edges inward, mark the intersection points, and fill them with pearl cotton. Sew the opening shut. Finally, use a hand-sewing needle to sew the intersection points together to enhance the stability of the cushion.

3. Woven Fabric Cushion This method requires two 37ร—37-centimeter square pieces of fabric and one 10ร—155-centimeter long strip of fabric. The steps are as follows:

  • Drawing Grids and Cutting: Divide each side of the square fabric into three equal parts and connect the points to draw a tic-tac-toe grid. Cut along the lines but leave about 2 centimeters uncut at the edges to form woven fabric strips.
  • Weaving and Securing: Cross-weave the fabric strips of the two pieces of fabric to form a flat cushion surface. Wrap the edge of the cushion with the long strip of fabric, sew it in place, and hide the excess thread.

Precautions:

  • When repurposing old clothes, ensure that the fabric is not damaged and the filling is evenly distributed.
  • The ironing step for the square cushion can enhance the flatness of the finished product. When filling with pearl cotton, use an appropriate amount to avoid making it too hard.
  • For the woven cushion, pay attention to keeping the width of the fabric strips consistent to avoid an uneven surface after weaving.
