Disassembly of Office Chair Cushion

Admin October 12, 2026

The method for disassembling an office chair cushion varies depending on the type and structure of the chair. Here are the specific steps:

I. Disassembly Steps for Common Office Chairs

  1. Flip the Chair and Secure Its Position Place the chair upside down on a soft surface (such as a carpet) to avoid scratches from hard objects. Ensure there is ample open space around for easy operation.

  2. Remove the Screws Connecting the Components

    • Connection between the Cushion and the Backrest: Use a screwdriver of the corresponding size (such as a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver) to unscrew the fixing screws, which are usually located at the back of the cushion or the bottom of the backrest.
    • Armrest Fixing Screws: Most armrests are fixed with hexagon socket screws, requiring a hexagon socket wrench for removal. If the screws are rusty, a small amount of lubricant can be sprayed to help loosen them.
  3. Separate the Gas Cylinder from the Base The gas cylinder of an office chair is connected to the base through an interference fit. Directly pulling hard may cause the gas cylinder to pop out or be damaged. The correct method is as follows:

    • Gently tap the side of the connection between the base and the cushion with a rubber mallet, using vibration to gradually separate the two.
    • If the connection is tight, alternate tapping at different positions to avoid excessive local force.

II. Disassembly Steps for Office Chairs with Special Structures

  1. Handle the Base Screws (if any) Some chairs require loosening the base screws first to separate the upper and lower parts. If the chair has no base screws, skip this step.

  2. Remove the Chair Legs and the Gas Spring

    • Separating the Chair Legs: Lift the chair to make the legs airborne, and tap the center of the legs from top to bottom with a rubber mallet until the rubber joints loosen.
    • Removing the Gas Spring: Invert the chair, hold the gas spring with one hand, and tap the base with a rubber mallet with the other hand until the gas spring comes off. Maintain stability during operation to prevent the gas spring from suddenly popping out.
  3. Use Gravity to Assist in Disassembly (for specific models) Adjust the chair to a reclined position, allowing the old cushion to hang down naturally under gravity. Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screws fixing the cushion one by one. Be sure to save small accessories (such as screws and washers) to avoid losing them and affecting subsequent installation.

III. Precautions

  • Tool Selection: Prepare corresponding tools according to the type of screws (such as a hexagon socket wrench and a Phillips screwdriver) to avoid using mismatched tools that may cause the screws to slip.
  • Safety Protection: Wear gloves when disassembling the gas cylinder to prevent scratches from metal parts. Ensure there is no one around when tapping to avoid injury from flying parts.
  • Saving Accessories: Store the removed screws, washers, etc., separately. It is recommended to use a small container for storage and label their positions for easy assembly later.

If you encounter snap-fit structures or hidden screws during disassembly, refer to the chair's instruction manual or contact the manufacturer for specific guidance to avoid damage caused by forced disassembly.
