Office Chair Cushion Disassembly
The disassembly of an office chair cushion should be carried out according to standardized procedures, as detailed below:

I. Preparation
Flip the office chair steadily so that the seat faces downward and place it on a soft surface (such as a carpet or foam pad). Ensure there are no sharp objects around to prevent damage to the chair or the floor during disassembly. This step provides a stable foundation for subsequent operations and reduces the risk of accidents.
II. Separate the Cushion from the Backrest
Use an appropriate screwdriver (usually a Phillips or flat-head type) to unscrew the fixing screws connecting the cushion to the backrest. The screws are typically located at the junction of the rear part of the cushion and the backrest. You may need to remove 1-4 screws, depending on the chair model. Keep the screws safe after unscrewing them to avoid difficulties in subsequent reassembly.
III. Remove the Armrest Components
Most office chair armrests are fixed to the sides of the cushion with hexagon socket screws. Use a hexagon socket wrench of the corresponding size to turn the screws counterclockwise and unscrew them. If the screws are rusty or too tight, you can spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in disassembly. Be aware that there may be cables connected inside the armrests (such as those for adjustment buttons), and operate gently to avoid breaking them.
IV. Separate the Gas Lift from the Base
The gas lift (lifting column) of an office chair is usually connected to the base through an interference fit. Pulling it directly may cause the gas lift to pop out or be damaged. The correct method is as follows:
- Use a rubber mallet (avoid using a metal hammer to prevent surface damage) to gently tap the side of the joint between the base and the cushion, loosening the fit through vibration;
- Tap alternately around the perimeter to gradually separate the base from the gas lift;
- Hold the chair body firmly with both hands during separation to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury. If the gas lift is too tightly connected to the cushion, you can use a wooden block to assist in tapping. Never use brute force to pull.
Precautions
- Take photos of the connection positions of each component before disassembly for easy reassembly later;
- If the chair has a gas lift, avoid disassembling the internal structure of the gas lift by yourself to prevent accidental release of high-pressure gas;
- After disassembly, store the screws and small parts in categories. Use containers or sealed bags for storage to prevent loss.
By following the above steps, you can systematically complete the disassembly of an office chair cushion, facilitating cleaning, repair, or replacement of components. Be patient during operation and follow the principles of mechanics to ensure both safety and efficiency.
