Office Chair Cushion Disassembly
Admin October 09, 2026
The disassembly method for an office chair cushion should be selected based on its connection structure, which can be divided into the following three categories:

I. Regular Disassembly (Applicable to Most Removable Structures)
If the cushion is fixed to the chair frame with screws, loosen the screws in reverse order of installation to achieve initial separation. However, note that the connections between the seat and the gas lift, and between the gas lift and the chair legs, are usually tight and require additional operations:
- Seat and Gas Lift Separation: Raise the gas lift to its highest position, hold the cushion steady with one hand, and continuously press the height adjustment lever while rocking it back and forth to loosen the connection using leverage;
- Gas Lift and Chair Leg Separation: If the chair legs are of a five-star base structure, remove the chair legs first (for some models, use a rubber mallet to strike the center of the chair legs from above to separate the gas lift from the chair legs), then invert the chair and strike the base until it detaches.
II. Base and Gas Lift Connection Disassembly (For Integrated Bases)
This type of structure requires step-by-step handling:
- Backrest Separation: If the backrest is fixed to the cushion with clips or screws, remove the backrest first to reduce resistance;
- Base Loosening:
- Screwed Base: Use a screwdriver to loosen the base fixing screws, separating the cushion from the gas lift vertically;
- Screwless Base: Lift the chair directly to get the chair legs off the ground, and strike the center of the chair legs from above with a rubber mallet to loosen the connection between the gas lift and the chair legs through vibration;
- Gas Lift Removal: After separating the chair legs from the gas lift, invert the chair and strike the base while holding the gas lift until the base detaches completely. Wear gloves during operation to prevent scratches.
III. Five-Star Base Connection Disassembly (For Tapered Snap-Fit Structures)
The connection between the five-star base and the steel column usually relies on tapered friction or a retaining clip:
- Retaining Clip Type: Invert the chair and observe whether there is a flat washer retaining clip at the bottom of the central column. If so, use needle-nose pliers to remove the retaining clip and then directly pull out the five-star base;
- Tapered Snap-Fit Type: If there is no retaining clip, the five-star base and the steel column are fixed by a tapered surface pressing tightly. In this case, wrap a soft cloth around an iron hammer (to avoid damaging the surface) and gently strike the edge of the five-star base from above, using vibration to gradually loosen and detach it. Strike evenly to prevent deformation of the steel column.
Precautions:
- It is recommended to take photos of the structure before disassembly for easy reassembly;
- Avoid using excessive force during operation to prevent damage to the gas lift or chair frame;
- If the connections are rusty, spray rust remover and wait for 5 minutes before proceeding with the operation.
