Office Chair Cracks in the Middle

Admin October 13, 2026

Cracks in the middle of an office chair can be caused by material fatigue and aging, structural design flaws, improper usage habits, or environmental factors. For wooden chairs, cracking may also involve factors such as incomplete wood drying, climate, transportation collisions, or improper maintenance, and the repair method should be selected based on the size of the crack.

Common Causes of Office Chair Cracking

  1. Material Fatigue and Aging: The chair panel, subjected to long-term weight-bearing or frequent use, may gradually develop cracks internally in materials such as metal, wood, and plastic. For example, oxidation and breakage at metal welds, and delamination of glued wooden panels due to glue aging are common issues, especially in old furniture that has been in use for more than 5 years.
  2. Structural Design Flaws: To save costs, low-priced chairs may use thin support panels or fail to install load-bearing crossbeams. When users lean back or sit sideways, stress-concentrated areas (such as the connection between the chair back and the seat) are prone to breakage.
  3. Improper Usage Habits: Operations such as exceeding the stated weight limit (commonly up to 100 kg for office chairs), stepping on the edge of the seat to retrieve items, or dragging the chair violently can accelerate damage. Tests conducted by the Jiangsu Quality Inspection Institute in 2021 showed that over 80% of broken seats had issues with off-center weight-bearing due to improper sitting postures.
  4. Environmental Factors: In northern China, heating in winter can easily dehydrate and crack wood, while in southern China, humid environments may cause plywood to absorb water and expand. Metal components can corrode 3-5 times faster in coastal areas with high salt content in the air.

Special Causes of Wooden Chair Cracking

  1. Incomplete Wood Drying: If the wood is not completely dried or has not been stored for a sufficient period, differences in moisture content can lead to internal stress cracking when environmental humidity changes.
  2. Climate Impact: Certain types of wood are sensitive to climate changes, and dry environments can easily trigger cracking.
  3. Transportation Collisions:็ฃ•็ขฐ (Collisions) during the transportation of solid wood furniture may cause hidden damage, leading to cracking during subsequent use.
  4. Improper Maintenance: Prolonged exposure to sunlight or placement in humid environments can accelerate wood deformation and cracking.

Repair Methods

  1. Small Cracks: They can be filled with wood glue; or after cleaning the broken part, apply 502 glue, sand it with fine sandpaper, and then fill and bond it with sawdust from the same type of wood; alternatively, cut newspaper into small pieces, boil them with alum to form a paste, fill it into the crack, and after drying, color it with a paint pen.
  2. Larger Cracks: Professional tools and techniques are required, or the broken part can be bonded with an adhesive and then filled with wood putty. During repair, try to maintain the original shape of the chair, take photos to record the damage before repair, and seek professional help if necessary to ensure quality.
