Methods for Making Office Chair Covers

Admin October 11, 2026

There are several common methods for making office chair covers:

Simple Cutting Method: First, prepare a piece of fabric large enough and lay it flat on the office chair. Use tailor's chalk to carefully trace around the edges of the chair. Draw a bit more at the top and both sides of the chair to leave some fabric hanging down for added aesthetics and practicality. Then, cut the fabric according to a one-centimeter seam allowance, and also cut out the side parts of the chair, leaving a one-centimeter seam allowance as well. Sew the two side pieces together, and make small cuts on the reverse side to make the seam lie flatter. Next, sew the bottom single-layer part. Finally, measure and cut a long strip for the backrest part and stitch it to the main body.

Making a Removable and Washable Backrest Cover from Scrap Fabric: Find a piece of scrap fabric of an appropriate size and drape it over the backrest of the office chair. Leave an opening at the widest part for easy putting on later. Cut off the excess fabric and hem the edges, leaving an opening when hemming. Lay the fabric flat and align the edges. Sew all the parts that need to be sewn and mark them. Start stitching from the bottom hemming area, fold the edge, and sew the two edges. Then fold it in half and sew from the inside. Lock several stitches at the end of the hem to enhance durability. Finally, attach Velcro. Fix the fuzzy side on the reverse side and the prickly side on the front side, leaving some thickness for easy removal and washing.

Pattern-Assisted Making Method: Find a large enough piece of paper and lay it along the edge of the office chair. Trace around the edge of the chair with a pen and then cut out the paper. Place the cut-out paper pattern on the fabric, expanding the edges by one inch or one and a half inches to leave room for sewing and adjustments. After hemming the edges of the fabric, thread elastic through it. When sewing, leave room for the seam allowance and make the hem slightly wider for easy threading of the elastic. After sewing, leave an opening to thread the elastic, use a bodkin to thread the elastic through, and finally put it on the chair to check if the size is appropriate.

General Making Steps: First, select an appropriate fabric according to the size and shape of the office chair, measure the dimensions, and draw a sketch. Calculate the area of the fabric needed, choose the material and color according to the interior decoration style, and try to select thick and stiff fabric to ensure the durability of the chair cover. There are various styles of chair covers. A simple way is to wrap the chair directly with fabric and fix it with pins, needles and thread, or fixed buttons in inconspicuous places. A more complex way is to add decorations such as lace, bows, and buttons. There are two types of chair covers: one-piece and two-piece. For the two-piece type, the backrest and the seat cushion are made separately, while for the one-piece type, they can be connected in the middle with zippers, buttons, etc. When making, sew the cut fabric with a sewing machine. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can also sew it by hand.
