Office Chair Cost
The accounting treatment of office chair costs should be determined based on their unit value and service life, primarily falling into two categories: being recorded as low-value consumables/management expenses or fixed assets. The specific handling rules are as follows:

I. Unit value below 5,000 yuan and service life not exceeding one year
Such office chairs are typically recorded as low-value consumables or directly expensed. If the organization chooses to put them into inventory and then issue them, two steps are required:
- Upon purchase: Debit 'Turnover Materials - Low-Value Consumables' and credit 'Bank Deposit', managing the office chairs as inventory;
- Upon issuance: Allocate expenses using the 50-50 amortization method, i.e., debit 'Management Expenses' (50% of the cost) in the month of issuance, and handle the remaining 50% upon scrapping or returning to inventory. For example, for an office chair purchased at 2,000 yuan, 1,000 yuan is directly recorded as management expenses upon issuance.
If the organization opts for simplified handling, it can directly deliver and expense the chairs: upon purchase, debit 'Management Expenses' and credit 'Bank Deposit', without transitioning through the low-value consumables account. According to central standards, the price ceiling for office desks below the department head level is 3,000 yuan, and such assets can usually be directly expensed. Office chairs that meet the criteria can also follow this practice.
II. High unit value and service life exceeding one year
Office chairs that meet the criteria must be accounted for as fixed assets and strictly follow the following procedures:
- Upon purchase: Debit 'Fixed Assets' and credit 'Bank Deposit', recording the actual cost;
- Subsequent measurement: According to central administrative unit standards, the minimum service life for office desks and chairs is 15 years, requiring monthly depreciation. The straight-line method is typically used for depreciation, debiting 'Management Expenses' and crediting 'Accumulated Depreciation', allocating the cost over accounting periods. For example, for an office chair purchased at 6,000 yuan, with 15 years of depreciation, the annual depreciation amount is 400 yuan (6,000 รท 15), and approximately 33.33 yuan is recorded as management expenses per month.
Key considerations:
- Unit value assessment: The procurement cost of a single office chair should be used as the basis, not the total price of a complete set of office furniture;
- Service life basis: The minimum service life specified by the organization's asset management system or tax laws should be used, not subjective estimates;
- Policy compliance: Central administrative units must strictly adhere to the 15-year minimum depreciation period, while other enterprises can refer to it but need to incorporate their own systems.
By following the above classification and handling methods, asset value consumption can be accurately reflected, compliance with accounting standards can be ensured, and tax risks can be avoided.
