Office Chair Consumable Parts

Admin October 10, 2026

The consumable parts of office chairs mainly include gas cylinders, five-star bases, wheels, movable parts, mesh and cushions, and lumbar supports, etc. The reasons for their damage are closely related to usage frequency, material properties, and structural design.

  1. Gas Cylinders and Five-Star Bases
As the core component for adjusting seat height, gas cylinders may experience reduced sealing or air leakage due to long-term pressure, especially with frequent lifting and lowering. Although five-star bases (supporting bases) are usually made of metal or high-strength plastic, they may be at risk of fracture if the material strength is insufficient or they are subjected to long-term eccentric loads. Some brands (such as AutoFull) list gas cylinders and five-star bases as 'core components' and offer a 5-year warranty, indirectly confirming their importance and vulnerability.

  2. Wheels
Wheels are components that directly contact the ground and roll frequently. Their wear rate is closely related to the ground material (such as carpet or tile), usage frequency, and wheel material (such as hard plastic or rubber). Hard wheels are prone to wear on rough surfaces, while rubber wheels, although quiet, may crack due to aging, resulting in poor rolling or jamming.

  3. Movable Parts
These include armrests, reclining mechanisms, and height adjustment structures. Armrests need frequent height or angle adjustments, and the connection points are prone to loosening due to repeated friction; reclining mechanisms rely on springs or dampers for angle adjustment, and the spring elasticity may decay after long-term use; if the height adjustment structure is poorly designed, it may cause wear at the connection between the gas cylinder and the chair body. The firmness and smooth adjustment of these parts directly affect their service life.

  4. Mesh and Cushions
The elastic mesh of mesh chairs may become loose or lose elasticity due to long-term weight bearing, especially for individuals with a heavier weight or those who sit for extended periods; if the density of the sponge cushion is insufficient, its support will weaken after long-term use, leading to sagging. Some products can delay such issues through high-density sponges or anti-aging tests (such as the 6-year performance test by SumLush).

  5. Lumbar Supports
Dynamically adjustable lumbar supports rely on springs or elastic materials for support. After long-term use, the springs may fatigue, resulting in reduced support; fixed lumbar supports may also deform due to long-term pressure if the material is too soft.

Purchase Recommendations: Prioritize products with a long warranty period (such as AutoFull's 3-year warranty for consumable parts), and pay attention to whether they have passed anti-aging tests or have EU/US certifications (such as the BIFMA standard), which can indirectly reflect the durability of the components. Avoid frequently and violently adjusting the movable parts during daily use, and regularly check whether the wheels are jammed and whether the gas cylinder is leaking air to extend the service life of the office chair.
