Office Chair Computer Chair Oil Leakage

Admin October 09, 2026

Oil leakage in office chairs and computer chairs usually indicates a problem with the hydraulic rod, with the leaked substance being hydraulic oil or lubricating oil, which must be taken seriously and addressed promptly.

Causes of Oil Leakage

Oil leakage from the hydraulic rod is a clear sign of system failure, with common causes including:

  • Aging or damage to seals: After prolonged use, seals may lose their sealing function due to wear and aging, leading to hydraulic oil leakage.
  • Component damage: Internal components of the hydraulic rod, such as pistons and cylinders, may be damaged by external impacts or prolonged use, causing oil leakage.
  • Contaminated or poor-quality hydraulic oil: If the hydraulic oil is contaminated with impurities or does not meet quality requirements, it may accelerate the wear of seals, leading to oil leakage.
  • Improper installation: If the hydraulic rod is not properly aligned or secured during installation, it may result in poor sealing and oil leakage.
  • Excessive system oil pressure: Excessive oil pressure may exceed the tolerance range of seals, causing damage and oil leakage.
  • Casting defects or poor machining accuracy in the equipment itself: If the hydraulic rod has casting defects or insufficient machining accuracy during manufacturing, it may affect its sealing performance and lead to oil leakage.

Hazards of Oil Leakage

Oil leakage directly leads to insufficient pressure in the hydraulic system, affecting chair performance, such as stuttering during lifting and lowering, inability to lock the height, and slow automatic sinking. Additionally, oil leakage may cause slippery floors, increasing the risk of personnel slipping. Hydraulic oil may have certain toxicity or corrosiveness, and long-term exposure or leakage into the environment may pose hazards to human health and the environment.

Handling Methods

For oil leakage in the lifting rod (gas spring) of an office chair, since it has a high-pressure sealed structure internally and is a disposable component, it cannot be disassembled for repair and must be immediately stopped from use and replaced with a new hydraulic rod as a whole. When replacing, it is strictly prohibited to drill, saw, heat, or attempt to disassemble the old gas spring to avoid the risk of explosion. Appropriate tools, such as a large pipe wrench, should be used to ensure stable operation, and a matching new lifting rod should be purchased. If the chair leaks oil but is still usable and you are unsure whether it is oil leakage or normal lubricating oil, consult customer service for confirmation. If the chair cannot be lifted or lowered or has other faults, after identifying the problem, you may attempt corresponding repair measures. However, repair work can be dangerous, and if you lack repair experience or cannot solve the problem, it is recommended to seek the help of professional repair personnel.
