Office Chair Composition and Structure

Admin October 10, 2026

The composition and structure of an office chair mainly include the base support structure, seat, backrest, upholstery, and other components.

The base support structure is the foundation of an office chair. It is typically made by bending steel tubes to form the frame for the bottom cushion, connecting the ends, and welding steel bars in the middle to support the mechanism for adjusting the seat position. Components such as the five-star base, gas lift, and seat plate are also part of the base support structure. The five-star base provides stable support for the chair, the gas lift is responsible for adjusting the chair's height, and the seat plate connects the gas lift and the seat, serving as a crucial link.

The seat is the part of the office chair that comes into direct contact with the human body, and its comfort is of utmost importance. The seat is generally composed of wood, foam, and fabric. Workers hang S-shaped steel springs from the front to the back of the seat frame to provide an elastic mesh. They then place horizontal bars and clamp them onto the springs to increase stability and support. After that, they cut the foam padding for the back of the chair. The softness of the seat depends entirely on the foam, which is placed between the frame and the upholstery to provide a comfortable sitting experience for the user.

The design of the backrest is equally important. It needs to be shaped according to the comfortable sitting posture of the human body during prolonged periods of sitting. The backrest frame includes the spine, armrest attachments, and other components. A layer of particleboard is added in the middle before installing the foam to increase stability. This design not only provides sufficient support but also ensures the comfort of the backrest.

The upholstery is the exterior part of the office chair and is usually made of leather or other fabrics. Workers lay the leather flat on a workbench, cut patterns according to cardboard templates, bypass natural flaws on the leather, and use parts of the same piece of leather to give the chair a consistent appearance and texture. The choice of upholstery not only affects the aesthetic appeal of the office chair but also relates to its durability and ease of cleaning.

In addition to the above main parts, an office chair also includes other components such as casters, armrests, and neck pillows. The support frame also incorporates a hydraulic device for adjusting the height up and down, a 360-degree rotating bearing, and movable wheels. These components work together to provide users with a convenient and comfortable experience.
