Composition of Office Chairs
Admin October 08, 2026
The composition of office chairs mainly includes basic components and functional parts, designed with a balance of ergonomics and practical functionality. It can be divided into the following sections:

1. Basic Structural Components
The core structure of an office chair consists of the seat, backrest, armrests, legs, and connecting parts.
- Seat: Directly supports the body's weight, typically made of multiple layers of materials. The base layer is a wooden or plastic board for support, the middle layer is filled with high-density foam to distribute pressure, and the top layer is covered with fabric (such as linen, mesh, or leather) for breathability and durability.
- Backrest: Supports the back, commonly designed as one-piece or split-piece. The frame is often made of steel or plastic, covered with mesh or foam fabric. Some high-end models are equipped with adjustable lumbar supports to enhance lower back support.
- Armrests: Reduce shoulder fatigue, usually made of plastic or soft PU. Some have 3D adjustment functions (height, forward/backward, and left/right rotation) to accommodate different sitting postures.
- Legs and Connectors: The legs are typically designed in a five-star shape, made of nylon or metal, with casters installed at the bottom for mobility. Connectors such as screws and rivets secure the various parts, ensuring structural stability.
2. Functional Components
- Gas Lift: The core component for adjusting seat height, achieving about 80mm of travel by compressing gas. It must be equipped with an anti-explosion device for safety.
- Base: The key structure connecting the gas lift to the seat, usually made of metal. It integrates a mechanical anti-explosion mechanism (such as trigger or knob-type locking) to control the seat's tilt angle and locking function.
- Casters (Chair Wheels): Mostly made of PA (nylon) material, supporting 360-degree omnidirectional rotation. Some models feature a silent design to reduce noise during movement.
- Headrest: A soft support attached above the backrest, made of the same material as the backrest. It can be adjusted in height or angle to relieve neck pressure.
3. Material and Craftsmanship Features
- Fabric Selection: Mesh fabric offers strong breathability, suitable for long-term use; leather or faux leather enhances texture but requires regular maintenance; linen is durable and cost-effective.
- Frame Strength: Steel frames offer greater load-bearing capacity, while plastic frames are lighter. Both must pass impact resistance tests to ensure safety.
- Adjustment Mechanisms: High-end office chairs are equipped with multi-directional adjustment functions (such as headrest, armrest, and lumbar support), allowing personalized adaptation through mechanical or pneumatic devices.
The design of office chairs must balance ergonomics, material strength, and cost, with all components working together to provide a comfortable and safe sitting experience.
