Office Chair Components

Admin October 09, 2026

The components of office chairs mainly include four categories: frame materials, fillers, fabrics, and accessories, as detailed below:

Frame Materials:
Solid wood frames commonly use beech, oak, or birch. Beech is hard and has good load-bearing capacity, suitable for high-end settings; oak has a beautiful grain and is often used in classical styles. Solid wood requires drying (with a moisture content of 8%-12%) and insect and rot resistance treatment. Metal frames are primarily made of cold-rolled steel plates (2.0-3.0mm thick, used for auditorium chairs and cinema chairs) and aluminum alloys (lightweight and corrosion-resistant, used for foldable seats). After welding, they require electrostatic spraying for rust prevention. Engineered wood, such as multi-layer plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF), is low-cost and commonly used for the seat bottoms of economy-class chairs, but must comply with the national E1 standard for formaldehyde emission (โ‰ค0.124mg/mยณ). Plastic frames use PA material (nylon) with 30% fiber reinforcement, used for the main body of headrests or backrests.

Fillers:
Sponges are divided into regular sponges (density 25-30kg/mยณ, low-cost, suitable for short-term use) and high-resilience sponges (density โ‰ฅ35kg/mยณ, good resilience, not prone to collapse after prolonged sitting, used for public seating). Molded cotton is shaped through hot pressing in molds, maintaining a stable shape, and is commonly used for the seat cushions and backrests of auditorium chairs. High-density molded cotton (6cm thick) can also be used for seat cushions. New polymer materials, such as TPEE, are used for lumbar supports and armrests, offering strong elasticity and flexibility.

Fabrics:
Among leathers, top-grain cowhide is breathable and wear-resistant but costly; split leather or PU leather offers moderate cost-effectiveness and requires testing for wear resistance (Martindale friction count โ‰ฅ50,000 revolutions). Fabrics are often made of polyester or nylon blends, with a wear resistance rating of ISO 12947 standard levels 5-6. Flame-retardant fabrics (compliant with GB 8624 B1 standard) are used in public places. Mesh fabric offers good breathability and is commonly found in ergonomic chairs, requiring attention to tensile strength. Velvet is soft and comfortable, with selection based on the usage scenario.

Accessories:
Gas lifts must pass SGS certification, with a safety rating of level 3 or 4 (e.g., a Korean brand's level 3 gas lift with a stroke of 85/60). Casters are primarily made of nylon or PU materials, with PU wheels causing less damage to floors (e.g., PA straight wheels, 60/25 black). Springs and cushioning components include serpentine springs or independently pocketed springs, used for sofa-type seats. The chassis features a synchronous tilt mechanism with three positions and is equipped with a protective cover. Chair legs are often custom-designed with a radius of 350mm and made of nylon for a high-leg design.
