Office Chair Component Materials

Admin October 09, 2026

The component materials of office chairs mainly include four categories: seat surfaces, frames, fillers, and accessories. The specific material characteristics are as follows:

Seat Surface Materials
The seat surface directly contacts the human body, and the material selection needs to balance comfort and functionality.

  • Mesh Fabric: Represented by 3D mesh fabric, it forms breathable pores through three-dimensional weaving, quickly dissipating heat and moisture from the buttocks and back. It is suitable for prolonged sitting or summer use. However, its support is affected by the weaving density, and products with good resilience should be selected to avoid sagging.
  • Leather (including PU leather/synthetic leather): Genuine leather offers a premium feel but comes at a high cost. PU leather and synthetic leather simulate leather texture through surface coatings, combining durability and ease of cleaning. However, they have poor breathability and can become stuffy in non-air-conditioned environments, making them suitable for formal office settings where appearance is prioritized.

Frame Materials
The frame is the supporting structure of the chair, directly affecting stability and service life.

  • Metal Frame: Often made of steel or aluminum alloy, it is formed through stamping or casting processes, offering high strength and resistance to deformation. It can withstand frequent use without producing noise, making it suitable for heavy users or public office areas.
  • Plastic Frame:
    • Virgin Nylon with Glass Fiber: By adding glass fiber to enhance toughness, it is resistant to breakage under long-term stress and has excellent aging resistance, making it a cost-effective engineering plastic choice.
    • Virgin PP: It has lower rigidity and may break under long-term pressure, and it is prone to aging and becoming brittle. However, it is low-cost and commonly found in low-end products.

Filler Materials
Fillers determine the comfort and support of the seating experience.

  • Sponge: Ordinary sponge is low-cost but prone to sagging; high-density sponge increases pore density to enhance support, suitable for prolonged use; high-resilience sponge optimizes elasticity through foaming processes to adapt to different sitting postures.
  • Memory Foam: Using slow-rebound materials, it can shape according to body temperature and pressure distribution, dispersing pressure points and reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting. However, it hardens in low-temperature environments and is relatively expensive.

Accessories and Other Materials
Details and accessories affect the user experience and safety.

  • Casters: Nylon casters are hard and suitable for soft surfaces like carpets; PU casters are coated with polyurethane to reduce noise and protect hard surfaces like wooden floors.
  • Gas Lift: As the core component for height adjustment, steel products certified by SGS or BIFMA should be selected to avoid explosion risks. The certification mark is usually printed on the surface of the lift.
