Office Chair Combustion

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair combustion can be caused by the explosion of low-quality gas springs or ignition from surrounding fire sources. The specific reasons are as follows:

1. Combustion triggered by the explosion of low-quality gas springs
Low-quality gas springs are a common hazard for office chair combustion. Their thin tube walls, impure inert gases, or the use of compressed air instead of inert gases can lead to high temperatures during repeated and frequent lifting and lowering operations. When the temperature exceeds the material's tolerance limit, the gas spring may explode and be accompanied by combustion. For example, in a Hunan TV program called 'News Truth Seeking', experimenters used a heavy object to impact the seat cushion of a low-quality chair, and the chair instantly exploded and burned, visually demonstrating the severity of such hazards. These accidents are usually directly related to substandard gas spring quality. To reduce costs, low-quality products may omit key safety designs, such as explosion-proof devices or flame-retardant coatings, thereby increasing the risk of combustion.

2. Ignition by surrounding fire sources
Another major cause of office chair combustion is ignition by external fire sources. Common scenarios include:

  • Power bank malfunction: A power bank that is charged for a long time or has an internal circuit fault may spontaneously ignite, which can then ignite surrounding office desks, office chairs, and other items. For example, a fire broke out in a lottery shop in Fujian in the early morning, caused by a power bank that had been charging for about 5 hours and malfunctioned, igniting the office desks and chairs.
  • Contact with open flames: When incense sticks, candles, or open flames are lit in the office for religious purposes and are not properly supervised, the flames may ignite the office chairs. On March 5, 2025, the owner of a factory in Jinhua, Zhejiang, lit incense sticks in the office and then left. The outer film of the incense sticks burned off and ignited the office desks and chairs, causing a fire.
  • Children playing with fire: When children use lighters, matches, etc., to play with fire, they may ignite trash cans or flammable materials, and the fire may spread to the office chairs. On February 5, 2025, a fire broke out in the office of a company in Dongguan, caused by children igniting a trash can, which affected office chairs and other items.

Prevention suggestions:

  • When purchasing office chairs, give priority to products that have passed national safety certifications and avoid using low-quality gas springs.
  • Avoid long-term charging or using aged power banks in the office, and regularly check circuit safety.
  • Keep away from open flames. If incense sticks, etc., need to be used, they should be supervised by a dedicated person and ensure there are no flammable materials around.
  • Strengthen children's safety education and prohibit playing with fire in the office area.
