Office Chair Collapse
Admin October 08, 2026
The collapse of an office chair should be addressed based on the cause, and self-inspection can be used to determine the problem type before taking repair or temporary improvement measures.

I. Self-Inspection to Determine the Cause of Collapse
- Observation and Pressing: Examine the collapsed area (center/side/whole) and press to feel the support. If the collapse depth exceeds 1 centimeter or there is a sensation of 'falling through' when sitting, it is likely due to damage to the internal support structure (springs, frame) or padding.
- Listening and Shaking: Listen for any 'creaking' sounds when sitting, standing up, or shaking, indicating loose connectors (screws, mortise and tenon joints).
- Special Inspection (Adjustable Chairs): Check if the gas lift is leaking oil, if the height adjustment is stuck or slides down automatically, and if the connection between the base and the gas lift is secure.
II. Classification and Handling Based on Cause
Collapsed Seat Padding
- Repair Solution: Replace the collapsed foam or springs, costing approximately 200-500 yuan per seat.
- Temporary Improvement: Use a 3-5 centimeter thick memory foam or gel seat cushion, preferably with a hollow center design to distribute pressure on the sitting bones, avoiding cheap foam pads that flatten easily.
Loose Connection Issues
- Tighten Screws: Use a screwdriver or wrench to tighten loose screws on the chair legs, armrests, backrest, etc..
- Repair Worn Holes: If the screw holes are worn, dip a toothpick or thin wooden stick in white glue and insert it into the hole, break off the excess, and let it dry for 24 hours before reinserting the screw; for loose mortise and tenon joints, clean off the old glue, apply new glue, tap the tenon back in, and secure until the glue dries.
- Install Corner Braces: If the connection between the chair legs and cross supports is loose, reinforce with straight corner braces.
Gas Lift Failure
- Replace with a Qualified Gas Lift: Choose a regular product with a clear trademark and qualification stamp on the cylinder to avoid the risk of air leakage, sinking, or even explosion from inferior gas lifts.
III. Potential Impacts of a Collapsed Office Chair
- Health Risks: A seat cushion collapsed by more than 2 centimeters can cause concentrated pressure on the sitting bone area, leading to muscle strain, back pain, and long-term damage to the spinal curve, increasing the risk of lumbar disc herniation; prolonged sitting can also compress the perineal area in men, affecting prostate health.
- Safety Hazards: Damage to the gas lift can cause the seat height to become uncontrollable or suddenly collapse, with inferior products posing a risk of explosion.
- Reduced Efficiency: An unstable sitting posture can distract attention and reduce work efficiency.
