Cold Feeling of Office Chairs
Admin October 08, 2026
The cold feeling of office chairs is mainly related to materials, indoor temperature, and usage scenarios, and can be improved by adding insulating materials, using electric heating seat cushions, etc.

Reasons for the Cold Feeling
- Materials and Design: Office chairs often use metal frames and plastic seat cushions. Metals have high thermal conductivity, and plastics have low heat capacity, both of which make them prone to rapid heat loss. For example, an aluminum alloy frame in a 20โ environment can have its surface temperature drop to around 15โ within 30 minutes, creating a significant temperature difference when in contact with the human body.
- Indoor Temperature: Office air conditioners are often set between 18 - 22โ, which is much lower than the human body's surface temperature (34 - 36โ). When the seat surface temperature is below 25โ, a cold sensation occurs upon human contact, especially in winter or areas directly exposed to air conditioning, where the temperature difference can exceed 10โ.
- Usage Scenarios: In winter or air-conditioned rooms, the surface temperature of seats drops more rapidly. Cheap synthetic leather, due to its poor air permeability, traps heat inside the material, which actually accelerates surface cooling. Densely woven fabrics, on the other hand, have small fiber gaps that impede air circulation, leading to increased heat dissipation efficiency.
Time of Getting Cold
For a typical office chair without insulation measures, its surface temperature drops to about 50% of the indoor temperature within about 30 minutes. For example, in a 20โ environment, the seat surface temperature may drop from an initial 28โ to around 10โ, at which point the cold sensation upon contact is significant.
Solutions
- Add Insulating Materials: Choose seat cushions or backrest covers made of wool or memory foam. These materials have low thermal conductivity, which slows down heat loss. Experiments show that a 5cm-thick memory foam seat cushion can reduce the rate of seat surface temperature drop by 40%.
- Use Electric Heating Seat Cushions: Select electric heating products with overheating protection. Continuously heat at a low power (recommended โค40W) to maintain the surface temperature between 28 - 32โ. Be careful to avoid direct contact with the metal frame to prevent local overheating.
- Improve the Indoor Environment: Adjust the air conditioner temperature to 22 - 24โ or use a space heater for local heating. Studies indicate that for every 1โ increase in indoor temperature, the cold sensation on the seat surface decreases by 15%.
- Choose Breathable Materials: In summer, switch to gel seat cushions, which have a low thermal conductivity (about 0.2W/mยทK). They can quickly disperse body heat while keeping the surface temperature 2 - 3โ lower than body temperature.
- Move Around Regularly: Get up and move around for 5 minutes every hour of sitting to promote blood circulation and reduce the temperature drop caused by local pressure. A dynamic sitting posture can reduce the amplitude of seat surface temperature fluctuations by 30%.
