Office Chair Cleaning Tips

Admin October 12, 2026

Cleaning an office chair requires separate cleaning of the chair body and the casters, with specific techniques as follows:

Chair Body Cleaning

When cleaning the chair body, follow a top-to-bottom order, wiping the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and legs sequentially to avoid omissions. The cloth should be slightly damp and not dripping to prevent water stains or surface moisture, which can lead to stubborn stains or material damage. If the seat is made of leather, use a dedicated leather cleaner to avoid damage from alkaline or acidic cleaners. For fabric seats, first use a vacuum cleaner to remove surface dust, then gently wipe with a slightly damp cloth. For stubborn stains, use a neutral cleaner locally, but be sure to dry promptly.

Caster Cleaning

1. Hair Removal

  • Scissor Trimming: Use small scissors to cut individual hairs wrapped around the wheels, though this is time-consuming and may damage the wheel surface.
  • Disassembly Cleaning: Turn the office chair upside down and gently pull out the caster bracket by hand (most are snap-on designs and require no tools; if stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the snap edge). After removing the casters, use tweezers to pull out long hairs and fibers from the gaps along the rotation direction of the casters to avoid residue.

2. Dirt Cleaning

  • Facial Tissue Friction Method: Soak a used facial tissue, let it air dry slightly, wrap the textured side around the wheel, secure it with a rubber band, and move back and forth while sitting on the chair to remove dirt through friction.
  • Neutral Dish Soap Brushing: Dip an old toothbrush in a small amount of neutral dish soap (avoid strong alkaline cleaners that can corrode the casters) and gently brush the wheel surface and bearing gaps to remove dust and grease. After brushing, rinse the casters with water (avoid getting water into the bearings), dry with a dry cloth, and let them air dry in a ventilated area for 10 minutes.

3. Subsequent Maintenance

  • Lubrication: After the casters are dry, apply 1-2 drops of office equipment-specific lubricant to the bearings (avoid using cooking oil, which attracts dust) and rotate the wheels to distribute the lubricant evenly.
  • Reinstallation: Align the casters with the bracket snaps and gently push in until you hear a 'click' sound. Confirm they are securely installed, then turn the chair upright and push to test for smooth movement. If there is still stuttering, check for residual debris.
  • Daily Maintenance: Clean the casters once a month and lubricate regularly; avoid placing heavy objects on the casters to prevent bearing deformation; you can stick invisible tape to the wheels (with appropriate width and moderate stickiness, keeping wrinkles when sticking) for both anti-slip and quick cleaning purposes.
