Cleaning Sponge for Office Chairs

Admin October 17, 2026

It is generally not recommended to directly wash the sponge part of an office chair with water. Instead, targeted cleaning methods can be used as an alternative. After absorbing water, the sponge is difficult to dry. Prolonged dampness can easily lead to rusting of the internal metal structure, mold growth, and drying the non-removable sponge cushion is even more challenging, which may affect its service life. Here are specific cleaning solutions:

I. Basic Cleaning: Dust Removal

1. Vacuum Cleaner Cleaning
Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft-bristle brush head to gently suck up surface dust along the texture of the sponge, avoiding hard-bristle brushes that may scratch the fabric. If there is a lot of dust, you can first manually pat (such as lightly tapping the chair surface with a hanger) to loosen the dust before vacuuming.
2. Manual Patting
For removable chair covers or lightweight sponges, you can remove the chair cover and hang it up for patting, or directly pat the chair surface to make the dust fall off through vibration. This method is suitable for daily maintenance and can reduce the frequency of deep cleaning.

II. Local Stain Removal: Targeted Treatment

1. Common Stains (coffee, milk tea, etc.)
Dilute a mixture of "1 part dishwashing detergent + 10 parts warm water" and use aๆ‹งๅนฒ (wrung-out) white towel (to avoid staining) to wipe the stain along the texture. After wiping, use another towel soaked in clean water to repeat the wiping to remove any remaining cleaning agent, and finally use a dry towel to absorb the moisture.
2. Stubborn Stains (oil stains, ink, etc.)
Select a small amount of water-based cleaning agent or a special dry-cleaning solution, dip a cotton swab into it, and gently dab the stain to avoid direct application that may cause spreading. When wiping, use a "small amount and multiple times" approach. After each wipe, use a dry towel to absorb the liquid to prevent the cleaning agent from seeping into the sponge.

III. Special Material Treatment

1. Mesh-Surface Sponge Chairs
When using a steam cleaner, maintain a distance of 20 centimeters and do not stay in one area for more than 3 seconds to avoid high-temperature deformation of the mesh surface. After cleaning, immediately use a hairdryer on the cool setting to dry it to prevent water vapor residue.
2. Nano Sponge Erasers
They are only suitable for surface dirt (such as on plastic parts, socket switches, etc.) and should not be directly used on the main sponge body. When using, control the amount of water to avoid excessive wetness causing the sponge to absorb water.

IV. Drying and Protection

1. Accelerated Drying
After cleaning, place the chair in a well-ventilated area or use an electric fan or hairdryer on the cool setting (avoid high temperatures) to dry it. If the sponge is damp and difficult to dry, you can use paper towels to press and absorb the water, replacing them every 2 hours until completely dry.
2. Daily Protection
For non-removable sponge chairs, it is recommended to add a chair cover or use a waterproof pad to reduce the direct contact of stains with the sponge. Regular vacuuming can extend the service life of the sponge.

Precautions:

  • Avoid using hot water or excessive cleaning agents to prevent stain solidification or fabric fading.
  • After cleaning, be sure to dry it thoroughly to prevent mold growth.
  • If the sponge already has mold spots or an odor, it is recommended to contact professional cleaning services for treatment.
