Cleaning Methods for Dirty Office Chairs

Admin October 08, 2026

Dirty office chairs can be cleaned using appropriate methods based on their materials, taking care to avoid damaging the materials and exposing them to direct sunlight.

Cleaning the Casters

  • Hair Entanglement: Use very small scissors to handle tangled hair.
  • Dirt Cleaning: After removing the hair, wet a used facial towel and let it air dry partially. Use the textured side to wipe the wheels. Wrap the towel around the wheels and secure it with a rubber band. Sit on the chair and move it back and forth to transfer the dirt from the wheels to the towel. Repeat this process several times for thorough cleaning. Alternatively, use invisible tape with moderate stickiness that leaves little residue on the wheels. When applying the tape, do not make it too flat; a slightly wrinkled application can prevent the wheels from becoming too slippery.

Cleaning Mesh Office Chairs

  • Use a vacuum cleaner to thoroughly remove dust.
  • Dilute the cleaning agent or pour it into a spray bottle and spray it onto the chair.
  • Allow the cleaning agent to sit on the chair for a while to help loosen dirt from the fibers.
  • Use a steam cleaner and a high-temperature washing machine alternately, performing at least two rounds of extraction.
  • During cleaning, use a water extractor to dry the washed chair and speed up the drying process.
  • You can also use a specialized cleaning agent and a brush for cleaning. In some cases, a soft-bristled toothbrush may be more suitable. Foam cleaning agents can also be used. After cleaning, gently blot with a tissue to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  • For dust removal, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean the mesh. For stains, use a soft brush dipped in soapy water to gently scrub, then wipe with a damp cloth and blot dry with a dry cloth. Check the frame for rust and avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading of the mesh fabric.

Cleaning Genuine Leather Office Chairs

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using rough tools like steel wool to prevent damage to the leather. For daily cleaning, first remove dust with a soft cloth or vacuum cleaner, then gently wipe with a specialized cleaning agent or a 1:1 diluted solution of white vinegar and water (test in a hidden area first). For oil stains or ink marks, use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of alcohol to quickly wipe, avoiding prolonged contact with the leather. After wiping, apply a leather conditioner. Do not expose to direct sunlight and avoid using harsh cleaning agents such as turpentine or gasoline.

Cleaning PU Material Office Chairs

If the armrests of the chair are made of this material, cleaning is easy and convenient. Simply wipe with a damp towel to remove most stains. If necessary, use a leather cleaner or leather brightener for deep cleaning and maintenance.

Cleaning Fabric Office Chairs

For ordinary stains, use a soft cloth dipped in a cleaning solution of neutral soap and warm water to gently wipe, being careful not to over-wet to prevent the filling from getting damp. For stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda and let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum it up to remove odors and stains. Removable fabric covers can be machine-washed according to the label instructions, while fixed covers should be manually wiped locally.

General Precautions

  • After cleaning, place the chair in a well-ventilated area to air dry naturally. Do not expose to direct sunlight, as this may cause fading or cracking of the fabric or leather.
  • Avoid scrubbing the chair surface vigorously to prevent damage to the surface. Do not wipe wooden or iron legs directly with a damp cloth to prevent corrosion or rust.
  • Regularly pat the areas where you sit for long periods to help the chair regain its shape and reduce sagging. Check screws and springs for looseness and tighten them promptly if they are loose.
