Office Chair Cleaning and Care

Admin October 12, 2026

Cleaning and caring for an office chair should start with aspects such as the seat surface and wheels. Here are the specific methods:

Seat Surface Cleaning

When cleaning the seat surface, follow a top-to-bottom order, cleaning the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and chair legs one by one to avoid omissions. The cloth must be slightly damp and not dripping to prevent water stains from remaining or the seat surface from getting damp. For sponge seat cushions, the cleaning steps are as follows:

  • Removing Loose Dust: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust first. If there is no vacuum cleaner, you can manually pat or gently tap with a hanger. It is advisable to wear a mask when there is a lot of dust.
  • Removing Stubborn Stains: Dip a clean, wrung-out cloth in a small amount of dry-cleaning solution or water-based cleaner, and gently wipe the stained area multiple times. Then, wipe it twice with a clean, wrung-out cloth to completely remove the cleaner residue.
  • Air-Drying: After cleaning, air-dry it promptly. You can place it in a well-ventilated area, use a fan to blow on it, or use a hairdryer (on the low-temperature setting). Avoid washing non-removable sponge cushions with water to prevent difficulty in drying, which can lead to mold growth.

Wheel Cleaning

Wheel cleaning should be done in three steps:

  • Disassembling the Wheels: Turn the chair upside down (with the seat surface facing down), and hold the wheel bracket with your hand and pull it outwards (most are snap-in designs). If the snap is tight, you can use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to gently pry the edge to remove it.
  • Removing Debris: Use tweezers to pick out hair, fibers, and other debris from the gaps in the wheels. Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to gently brush the surface and bearing gaps. Finally, rinse with water (avoid getting water into the bearings), and dry them and let them air-dry in a well-ventilated area for 10 minutes.
  • Lubricating and Reinstalling: Drip 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment onto the bearings, and rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the oil. Then, align the wheels with the bracket snaps and push them in until you hear a "click" to confirm that they are securely installed. Turn the chair upright and push it to test. If there is still stuttering, check for any remaining debris.

Other Cleaning Tips

  • Hair Removal: Use small scissors to cut off tangled hair, or wrap the wheels with a damp and air-dried face towel (with the concave-convex side facing outwards), secure it with a rubber band, and then move the chair to repeatedly clean the dirt.
  • Stain Prevention: Stick invisible tape on the surface of the wheels and keep the wrinkles to increase friction. This can not only reduce stains on the floor but also prevent the wheels from being too slippery.
