Classification of Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chairs in units can be primarily classified into three core types: executive chairs, staff chairs, and ergonomic chairs. Additionally, in a broader sense, they also include various subcategories such as mid-back chairs, guest chairs, and conference chairs.

I. Core Functional Classifications

  1. Executive Chairs
Designed for high-end business scenarios, they typically feature top-grain leather upholstery, high-density foam padding, and a metal frame, with a weight capacity generally exceeding 150 kilograms. Their high backrests, wide armrests, and thick leather emphasize comfort and a sense of ceremony, primarily serving business receptions and short-term executive office work.

  2. Staff Chairs
Tailored for employee workstations in open office areas, they predominantly use mesh or PU materials, focusing on lightweight breathability and cost control. Basic functions include gas lift height adjustment, with some models offering simple recline adjustments. The design aims to provide basic sitting support for daily 8-hour work within limited space and budget, meeting the general needs of most employees.

  3. Ergonomic Chairs
Focused on health support, they dynamically adapt to body curves through multi-dimensional adjustments (such as lumbar support, seat depth, armrests, and recline angles) to alleviate lumbar and cervical spine pressure. High-end models are equipped with technologies like gravity-sensing posture reminders and waterfall edge seat cushions (to promote blood circulation), with price ranges spanning from several hundred to eight thousand yuan, suitable for high-intensity seating scenarios like prolonged office work, design, and programming.

II. Broad Classifications Supplement

According to the broad definition by OfficeMate, office chairs also include:

  • Mid-back Chairs: Sized between executive and staff chairs, commonly found in middle management offices, balancing comfort and cost-effectiveness in materials and functions.
  • Guest Chairs/Visitor Chairs: Designed simply, mostly using lightweight materials, for reception areas or temporary meetings, emphasizing easy mobility and space utilization.
  • Conference Chairs: Usually designed in rows with simple backrests to meet the needs of multiple people using them simultaneously in conference rooms.
  • Training Chairs: Lightweight and foldable for easy storage, suitable for training rooms or temporary event scenarios.

III. Special Category Extensions

Computer chairs, as a subcategory of office chairs, are further divided into:

  • Work Chairs: Designed for prolonged computer operation, emphasizing lumbar support and neck adjustment.
  • Student Chairs: Smaller in size with simplified functions, suitable for students or home office scenarios.

Different types of office chairs meet diverse needs ranging from basic sitting support to healthy office work through differentiated designs in materials, functions, and scenarios.
