Office Chair Central Column Wobble

Admin October 10, 2026

The wobble of the central column of an office chair can be resolved through targeted troubleshooting and repair. Common causes and solutions are as follows:

1. Aging or seal failure of the gas lift cylinder
The gas lift cylinder is the core component that supports the chair's height adjustment. After long-term use, the internal seals may wear or age, leading to a decrease in sealing performance, which can cause unstable air pressure and slight wobbling. Detection method: Perform a height adjustment test by repeatedly adjusting the seat height. If there is any up-and-down movement or stuttering during adjustment, it can be determined as a gas lift cylinder issue. Solution: Replace the gas lift cylinder with one of the same specifications that has passed safety certifications such as SGS and BIFMA. Avoid using low-quality parts to prevent the risk of the gas lift cylinder exploding.

2. Loose chassis connectors
The connections between the five-star base, chair legs, and gas lift cylinder are usually secured with screws. Frequent movement or long-term stress can cause these screws to loosen. Detection method: Gently shake the chair by hand. If the wobbling is concentrated at the junction of the chassis and chair legs, or if you hear a metallic friction sound, it is likely due to loose screws. Solution: Use an Allen wrench to tighten all visible connecting screws. It is recommended to check them once a month, especially for users with a heavier weight or high frequency of use.

3. Wheel hub wear or foreign object blockage
Long-term friction between the casters and the ground can cause wear on the wheel axles, creating gaps that make the chair unstable when moving. Detection method: Push the chair in a straight line. If the wheels make abnormal noises or do not turn flexibly, it can be determined as a wheel hub issue. Solution: Clean any debris from the wheel axles or replace the entire set of casters (preferably choose soft, quiet casters, which offer better wear resistance and stability).

4. Deformation of the seat connectors
The weight of the user can cause the metal connectors (such as the fixed bracket between the seat and the gas lift cylinder) to gradually deform, creating movement space. Detection method: Perform a rotation test by holding the armrests with both hands and applying force left and right. If the wobbling comes from the pivot area and is accompanied by a metallic friction sound, it is likely due to connector deformation. Solution: If the chair has been in use for more than 3 years, it is recommended to evaluate the overall structural strength and replace the seat base or chair frame if necessary.

Recommended inspection process:

  • First, perform a height adjustment test to rule out gas lift cylinder issues;
  • Then, check the chassis screws and tighten them to see if the wobbling improves;
  • Finally, use movement and rotation tests to locate wheel hub or connector faults.
    If the above methods do not resolve the issue, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician or replace the chair with a new one.
