Office Chair Caster Wheels

Admin October 17, 2026

The caster wheels (casters) of an office chair are the core components that enable the chair's mobility. They are typically installed at the bottom of the five-star base, providing rotational cushioning and movement locking functions through elastic brackets and rollers. Some models also offer gravity wheels, swivel casters, and other types to suit different scenarios.

Structure and Function of Caster Wheels

Caster wheels consist of elastic brackets and rollers, with their primary function being to support the chair's weight and enable flexible movement. The elastic brackets are usually made of high-strength plastic or metal materials and may incorporate springs or shock-absorbing structures internally. These brackets can cushion vibrations caused by uneven ground surfaces while providing stable control during movement through friction. The roller parts are mostly made of hard plastic or rubber materials with smooth surfaces to reduce friction. Some high-end models feature silent designs to minimize noise during movement.

Installation Position and Role of Caster Wheels

Caster wheels are fixed at the ends of the five legs of the five-star base, forming a 360-degree rotating structure. This design allows the chair to turn freely in a plane without needing to be moved as a whole, greatly enhancing usability. At the same time, the elastic brackets of the caster wheels can adapt to different floor surfaces (such as carpets, tiles, and wooden floors) by adjusting the bracket pressure to maintain smooth movement and avoid stuttering or slipping due to differences in ground friction.

Types of Caster Wheels and Scenario Adaptation

  1. Swivel Casters: The most common type, with wheels that can rotate in all directions, suitable for scenarios requiring frequent directional adjustments, such as open office areas or meeting rooms. They offer high flexibility but relatively weak stability and may cause the chair to slide on inclined surfaces due to the free rotation of the wheels.
  2. Gravity Wheels: Equipped with built-in gravity sensors, these wheels automatically lock when a person sits on the chair to prevent accidental movement and unlock to restore flexibility when the person stands up. This design is suitable for scenarios requiring a fixed position, such as in front of drafting tables or precision workbenches, to avoid affecting work accuracy due to chair sliding.
  3. Brake Casters: Some caster wheels are equipped with manual brake devices that can be locked by stepping on them or pressing them, suitable for scenarios requiring temporary chair fixation, such as in front of podiums or medical examination beds.

Maintenance and Replacement of Caster Wheels

After long-term use, caster wheels may experience reduced mobility due to wear or dust accumulation. During maintenance, the surface of the wheels can be cleaned with a damp cloth, and the elastic brackets should be checked for looseness. If the wheels are severely stuck or the brackets are broken, they should be replaced with the same model of caster wheels in a timely manner to avoid chair tilting or loss of movement control due to component damage, which could affect usage safety.
