Office Chair Caster Stuck

Admin October 14, 2026

If the office chair caster is stuck, you can try the following methods to solve the problem:

Disassembly and Cleaning Method

  • Disassemble the casters: Turn the office chair upside down with the seat facing down, and be careful to protect the seat fabric. Most office chair casters are designed with snap-on brackets. Hold the caster bracket with your hand and gently pull the caster outwards without using any tools. If the caster is stuck tightly, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry the edge of the snap-on bracket. To avoid scratching the bracket, you can place a soft cloth underneath. Alternatively, you can insert two screwdrivers into both sides of the caster wheel and pry the screwdrivers outwards to make the caster spring retract. Then, pull out the other caster forcefully to remove its shaft from the shaft sleeve. If necessary, you can lightly tap the end of the shaft with a small hammer to loosen it.
  • Clean debris: After removing the casters, check each one for trapped hair and debris. Use tweezers to pull out long hair strands and carpet fibers from the caster gaps along the direction of caster rotation to prevent the hair from getting more entangled. Then, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently scrub the caster surface and bearing gaps to remove residual dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse the casters with clean water (avoid getting water into the bearing part), dry them with a dry cloth, and let them air-dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes. You can also directly use tweezers or toothpicks to remove the entanglements, cut the hair with scissors, and for stubborn dirt in the gaps, sweep it with a soft-bristled brush and then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
  • Lubricate and reassemble: After the casters are dry, drip 1 - 2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment onto the bearings. Avoid using cooking oil to prevent dust absorption. Rotate the casters by hand to distribute the lubricating oil evenly. Then, align the casters with the bracket snap-on parts and gently push them in until you hear a "click" sound to confirm that the casters are securely installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push the chair to test if the casters roll smoothly. If there is still stuttering, check if there is any remaining debris that has not been cleaned. You can also clean it thoroughly and then spray a small amount of silicone-based lubricant or special low-viscosity lubricant at the wheel-shaft connection. Then, manually rotate the wheels a few times to distribute the lubricant evenly. Be careful not to use regular engine oil.

Check the Casters and Surrounding Areas

  • Check for debris around the casters: Carefully examine whether there are any paper scraps, hair, threads, or other debris around the casters. If so, carefully clean them away and see if the casters can rotate again.
  • Check if the casters are damaged: If the rubber part of the casters is severely worn or has cracks, preventing normal rotation, you need to purchase casters of the same model that are compatible with the office chair and replace them according to the instruction manual or online tutorials.
  • Check the condition of the shaft: If the shaft of the casters is loose or rusty, it can also cause the casters to get stuck. First, check if the screws are loose and tighten them. If the shaft is rusty, spray it with a rust remover to remove the rust stains and then drip in some lubricating oil to reduce the friction between the shaft and the casters.

Adjust the Chair Position

The ground condition where the chair is placed can also affect the rotation of the casters. If the ground is uneven or has too much friction, the casters will not rotate well. You can move the chair to a flatter and smoother ground surface, such as a wooden floor or a tiled floor.
