Office Chair Caster Selection

Admin October 10, 2026

When selecting office chair casters, it is essential to consider factors such as type, load capacity, material, steering and braking functions, size, and design details to ensure they meet core requirements like quiet operation, wear resistance, and safety.

  1. Type Selection
For office settings, swivel casters are preferred due to their 360ยฐ flexible steering design, which reduces movement resistance and enables quiet rolling with precision bearings, minimizing disruptions in the office environment. Some high-end casters feature dual-bearing structures to further reduce friction noise, making them ideal for scenarios requiring frequent posture adjustments or chair movement.

  2. Load Capacity
Adhere to the principle of "leaving a margin" by selecting casters based on the combined weight of the user and equipment. For example, if the user weighs approximately 100kg, it is advisable to choose casters with a load capacity exceeding 150kg to prevent wheel deformation or bracket fractures due to overloading over time. Some 3-inch casters can support up to 45kg, meeting the needs of most average users, but note that the actual load capacity must include the weight of the chair itself.

  3. Material Characteristics

  • Nylon Material: Highly wear-resistant and cost-effective, suitable for hard floors, but generates slightly more rolling noise than polyurethane.
  • Polyurethane (PU) Material: Offers excellent elasticity, smooth and quiet rolling, and effectively protects wooden floors or tiles from scratches, making it the preferred choice for office environments. Some PU casters feature a lubricated surface layer to further reduce friction coefficients.
  1. Steering and Braking Functions
  • Swivel Casters: Ideal for scenarios requiring flexible movement, such as open office areas or collaborative environments.
  • Casters with Brakes: Provide enhanced safety in settings where the chair needs to remain stationary, such as beside conference tables, preventing accidental sliding due to touch. Some casters feature a single-foot brake design for convenient operation and high stability.
  1. Size Adaptation
The common size is 3 inches (75mm), which balances maneuverability and stability, suitable for most office chairs. Some chairs come with 60mm casters as standard. If upgrading to a larger size, verify that the mounting hole spacing on the chair leg brackets matches to avoid installation difficulties due to size mismatches.

  2. Design Details
High-quality casters should have smooth, jam-free bearings, a burr-free wheel surface, and a bracket thickness of at least 2mm to ensure load-bearing strength. If unusual noises or wobbling occur during movement, it may indicate bearing damage or bracket deformation, requiring prompt replacement. Some brands provide caster lifespan test reports, which can be referenced based on rolling cycles or wear resistance coefficients to select reliable products.
