Office Chair Caster Replacement

Admin October 17, 2026

The replacement of office chair casters can be carried out according to the following steps, and attention should be paid to tool usage and detail handling during the operation:

I. Removing the Old Casters

  1. Regular Removal Method: Use pliers to grip the connection between the caster and the chair frame firmly and pull it out evenly. If the caster is rusted or stuck due to long-term use, you can tap the edge of the caster lightly with a hammer to loosen it through vibration and then pull it out.
  2. Screw-Fixed Removal: Some casters are fixed to the chair frame with screws. In this case, use a screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise until they are completely loose, and then remove the old casters. These casters are commonly found in models with adjustable height or brake functions. Before removal, confirm the type of screws (e.g., Phillips or flat-head) to avoid slippage due to mismatched tools.

II. Installing the New Casters

  1. Direct Insertion Method: Align the new caster with the mounting hole on the chair frame and press it down vertically with force. If it is not fully inserted in one attempt, adjust the angle and press again, or tap the top of the caster lightly with a rubber mallet to assist with installation. Note: Avoid using a metal hammer to tap directly to prevent damage to the surface of the caster or the chair frame.
  2. Screw-Fixed Installation: If the new caster requires screw fixation, first align the caster with the mounting hole, use a screwdriver to insert the screw initially, and then gradually tighten it until it cannot turn. Key Point: The screw must be fully inserted to prevent the caster from falling off due to looseness; if the chair frame is made of plastic, control the tightening force to prevent thread stripping.

III. Caster Selection Recommendations It is recommended to choose casters with a 3-inch black PU wheel rim, which have the following advantages:

  • Quietness: The PU material produces low noise when rubbing against the ground, making it suitable for office or home environments.
  • Floor Protection: The soft wheel rim can reduce scratches on hard floors such as wooden floors and tiles.
  • Load-Bearing Capacity: Each wheel can bear a weight of up to 45 kilograms, meeting the usage needs of most office chairs.
  • Durability: The PU material is highly wear-resistant and has a longer service life than ordinary plastic wheels.

IV. Precautions

  1. Before replacement, confirm that the specifications of the new and old casters are the same (e.g., wheel diameter, mounting method) to avoid installation failure due to size mismatch.
  2. Wear gloves during operation to prevent metal parts from scratching your fingers.
  3. If the mounting hole on the chair frame is deformed due to rust, you can first sand the rust off with sandpaper or apply a small amount of lubricating oil to assist with removal.
