Office Chair Caster Replacement

Admin October 14, 2026

The replacement of office chair casters can be carried out according to the following steps:

I. Removing the Old Casters

  1. Screw-type casters: If the casters are fixed with screws, use an appropriate screwdriver or wrench to turn them counterclockwise and remove them. When operating, keep the tool perpendicular to the screw to avoid slipping. If the screw is rusty, spray a small amount of rust remover to assist in removal.
  2. Round-pin-type casters:
    • Direct pulling: Hold both sides of the caster with both hands and pull it straight up.
    • Assisted tools: If direct pulling is difficult, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the gap between the caster and the chair leg and gently pry the pin. Alternatively, use pliers to grip the base of the pin and tap the handle of the pliers lightly with a hammer to loosen the connection through vibration.
    • Extreme cases: If the pin is severely rusted, you can directly tap the top of the caster with a hammer to separate it from the chair leg using impact force.

II. Installing the New Casters

  1. Aligning the holes: Vertically align the pin of the new caster with the mounting hole on the chair leg, ensuring the correct direction (some casters have directional markings, such as brake casters that need to face the operable side).
  2. Pressing to fix: Press evenly on the top of the caster with the palm of your hand until the pin is fully embedded in the hole. If it doesn't fit in one go, slightly rotate the caster to adjust the angle and press again. Avoid violent hammering that could deform the chair leg.
  3. Testing stability: After installation, gently shake the caster to check for looseness. If there is a gap, press repeatedly or tap the edge of the caster lightly with a rubber mallet to reinforce it.

III. Precautions

  1. Tool selection: Preferably use a rubber mallet or wooden hammer for tapping to avoid direct damage to the surface of the chair leg by a metal hammer. Choose pliers with anti-slip patterns to prevent pinching the pin.
  2. Matching caster properties: Select caster specifications according to the usage scenario, for example:
    • Diameter: 3-inch casters are suitable for carpets, and 5-inch casters are suitable for hard floors.
    • Material: PU casters are quiet and do not damage the floor, while nylon casters are wear-resistant but noisier.
    • Load capacity: The load capacity of a single caster should be โ‰ฅ the maximum load of the chair / the number of casters (e.g., for a 4-caster chair, the load capacity of a single caster is recommended to be โ‰ฅ 45 kg).
  3. Safe operation: Wear gloves when disassembling to prevent scratches. Ensure there are no fragile items around when tapping to avoid injury from the caster flying off.

If the caster still does not rotate smoothly after replacement, check if there is any foreign matter stuck in the caster shaft or apply a small amount of lubricating oil to the bearing of the new caster for maintenance.
