Office Chair Caster Replacement
When replacing the casters on an office chair, first determine the type of caster, then disassemble and install the new ones accordingly. It is recommended to choose 3-inch PU casters. If the casters are stuck, clear any foreign objects first.

I. Determine the Caster Type and Disassemble
Office chair casters mainly come in two types, each requiring different disassembly methods:
- Round Rod Type: These casters are fixed by inserting a rod directly into the hole at the bottom of the chair. To disassemble, hold the caster with both hands and pull it straight up. If you lack strength, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the plastic gap between the caster and the chair, and gently pry to assist in separation. Alternatively, use pliers to grip the base of the rod and tap the handle of the pliers lightly with a hammer to loosen the rod before pulling it out.
- Hexagonal Screw Type: These casters are fixed to the chair with hexagonal screws. Use a matching hexagonal wrench (or L-shaped wrench) to turn the screw counterclockwise and remove it, thereby taking off the caster. If the screw is rusty, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) and wait a few minutes before operating.
II. Install New Casters
- Choose the Right Casters: It is recommended to use 3-inch (75mm) PU casters. These casters have a polyurethane surface, which is smooth and quiet, producing no noise when moving; they protect the floor, avoiding scratches on wooden floors or tiles; and they have a strong load-bearing capacity, with each caster able to bear about 45 kilograms, suitable for most office scenarios.
- Installation Steps: Align the rod (or screw hole) of the new caster with the hole at the bottom of the chair and press it straight down until you hear a "click" sound or feel the rod fully inserted. For screw-type casters, align the screw with the hole and turn it clockwise to tighten.
III. Handling Special Situations
If the caster is stuck due to entanglement with foreign objects such as hair or fibers, first use scissors or tweezers to clear the entanglement, then test if the caster moves freely again. If it still does not work properly after clearing, follow the above steps to replace it with a new one.
Tip: When replacing casters, it is also recommended to check if the holes at the bottom of the chair are damaged or deformed. If the holes are damaged, the new casters may not be installed securely, and you may need to contact a professional repair technician for assistance.
