Office Chair Caster Replacement

Admin October 09, 2026

Replacing office chair casters requires step-by-step operations, as detailed below:

I. Preparing Tools and Materials

Select tools based on the caster type:

  • Basic Tools: Screwdrivers (Phillips or flat-head), pliers, soft cloth (to protect the chair surface).
  • Special Cases: If the casters are clogged with debris and require cleaning, prepare tweezers, an old toothbrush, neutral detergent, a dry cloth, and lubricant (specialized for office equipment).
  • Key Materials: New casters that match the original ones in size (diameter, wheel width, and clip type must be consistent).

II. Removing Old Casters

  1. Flip the Chair: Place the chair face down to avoid scratching the fabric.
  2. Clip-On Casters:
    • Grasp the caster bracket with your hand and pull outward evenly; if the clip is too tight, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to gently pry the edge, or use pliers to grip the interface between the wheel and the bracket, using it as a fulcrum to pry and rotate counterclockwise.
    • Special Cases: If the plastic part of the wheel is broken but the axle is still connected to the chair, grip the upper part of the ring as a fulcrum and continue prying.
  3. Threaded Casters: Some casters are fixed with threads and need to be unscrewed counterclockwise with a screwdriver.

III. Cleaning and Lubricating (Optional)

If the casters are not rotating smoothly due to hair or fiber clogging, clean them first:

  1. Disassemble the Casters: Separate the wheel from the bracket and check for debris in the gaps.
  2. Remove Debris:
    • Use tweezers to pull out hair in the direction of wheel rotation to avoid tangling.
    • Dip an old toothbrush in neutral detergent and gently brush the surface and bearing gaps to remove oil and dust.
    • Rinse with water (avoid getting water into the bearings), dry with a dry cloth, and air dry for 10 minutes.
  3. Lubricate and Reassemble:
    • Apply 1-2 drops of specialized lubricant to the bearings and rotate the casters to distribute the oil evenly.
    • Align the casters with the bracket clips and gently push until you hear a 'click' to confirm they are securely installed.

IV. Installing New Casters

  1. Press-Fit Installation: Align the new casters with the bracket clips and press them in vertically with significant force; or press while rotating clockwise. If it is difficult to press in, sit on the chair and use your weight to press them in.
  2. Threaded Installation: If the design is threaded, rotate the casters clockwise until they are tightened.
  3. Test Stability: Flip the chair back over and push it to test. If the casters are loose or jammed, check for residual debris or improper installation.

Precautions: Avoid using excessive force during operations to prevent bracket deformation; use specialized lubricant to prevent dust attraction; if the casters are frequently damaged, check if the chair bracket is deformed or if the floor is uneven.
