Office Chair Caster Repair

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair caster repair can be carried out following these steps:

Check the casters and the floor condition

Place the chair upright and ensure that each caster foot is in contact with the ground. Then, turn the chair upside down and carefully inspect each caster foot for signs of damage, such as bending or breakage. Caster problems may arise from uneven weight distribution, manufacturing defects, or general wear and tear. At the same time, check if the floor where the chair is placed is extremely uneven. An uneven floor can prevent all the casters from touching the ground, causing the chair to tilt towards the lower side when someone sits on it.

Replace damaged casters

  • Identify the caster type: After turning the chair upside down, observe the connection method of the damaged caster. There are mainly two types: threaded and pin-type. Threaded casters have a threaded rod at the top that screws directly into the threaded hole in the chair base. Pin-type casters have a metal pin at the top that inserts into the base hole and is secured by an internal snap ring or rubber expansion ring.
  • Remove the old casters:
    • Threaded type: Use your hands or a pair of pliers or a screwdriver as a lever to rotate the caster counterclockwise and unscrew it.
    • Pin-type: Squeeze the caster firmly with both hands (or use pliers), press down while rotating it left and right to release the snap ring using elastic deformation and pull out the caster. If you cannot pull out the caster foot by hand, insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the caster foot and the chair contact point and operate it back and forth slowly. Once the caster foot rod is pulled out of the chair socket by about 1 centimeter, pull the caster foot again. In rare cases, the caster is fixed to the bottom of the chair with screws. In this case, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws and remove the caster.
  • Install new casters: When purchasing new casters, ensure that their model, size (such as pin diameter and caster width), and load-bearing capacity match those of the old ones. You can contact the chair manufacturer for the model number to order matching caster feet or take one of the old casters to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set. During installation, for threaded casters, align the new caster with the hole and screw it in clockwise and tighten it. For pin-type casters, align the pin of the new caster with the hole in the chair base and insert it vertically with force until you hear a 'click', indicating that the snap ring has snapped into place. You can also apply a small amount of spray lubricant or petroleum jelly to assist with installation. If the caster is not in place, gently tap the caster with a rubber mallet.

Test the repair effect

Turn the chair upside down and sit on it. If it rolls smoothly and evenly without tilting to one side, the repair is successful. If the chair still tilts, continue to check if the seat plate is damaged. In addition, low-priced casters may have problems such as poor load-bearing capacity and easy loosening. You can consider replacing them with higher-quality snap-ring straight-insert universal casters.
