How to Remove Office Chair Casters

Admin October 08, 2026

The method for removing office chair casters depends on the type of caster and requires selecting the appropriate tools and steps, as detailed below:

  1. Snap-ring Casters
These casters feature a circular snap-ring structure at the connection point. To remove, use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver to align with the edge of the snap-ring and gently pry it away from the caster. Once separated, the old caster can be removed. Exercise caution with the force applied to avoid damaging the snap-ring or chair body. If the snap-ring is too tight, apply a small amount of lubricant to the connection area and attempt prying again after lubrication.

  2. Threaded Casters
Threaded casters have a hexagonal nut structure at the connection point. Use a wrench of the corresponding size to turn the nut counterclockwise. If the caster is tightly secured due to prolonged use, use pliers to hold the caster body steady while turning, or spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) or mild degreaser onto the threads to reduce friction before removal. If the threads are severely rusted, lightly tap the end of the wrench with a hammer to loosen the nut through vibration.

  3. Stem Casters
Stem casters are inserted directly into holes in the chair body without additional fastening structures. To remove, grasp the caster with both hands and pull straight upward with force. If strength is insufficient, insert a flathead screwdriver into the gap between the caster and chair body and gently pry to widen the gap before pulling out. Alternatively, use pliers to grip the base of the stem and lightly tap the plier handle with a hammer, using leverage to push the caster out.

  4. Push-button Casters
Push-button casters have an internal spring clip for securing. Insert a flathead screwdriver or small wrench into the clip hole on the side of the caster (usually a small indentation or slot) and press inward on the clip while lifting the caster upward to unlock and remove it. Maintain the tool perpendicular to the clip hole during operation to prevent slippage and hand injuries.

  5. Other Special Cases
If the caster type is unclear or the above methods are ineffective, lay the chair flat or flip it over so the casters face upward. Use large scissors or needle-nose pliers to target the connection interface between the caster and chair body and gently pry up and down to loosen the interface. Once the caster is movable, pull it out directly. This method is suitable for plastic or simple metal connection structures but requires controlling the force to prevent chair damage.

Precautions: Wear gloves to protect your hands before disassembly. If the casters are severely aged, debris may remain during removal, so clear the work area in advance. When installing new casters, ensure the model matches and is securely fastened to prevent detachment after use.
