Office Chair Caster Removal
Admin October 19, 2026
The methods for removing casters from an office chair vary depending on the type of caster. Here are the specific steps:

Snap-ring (quick-release) Casters
- Flip the chair: Turn the office chair upside down so that the seat faces downward, ensuring sufficient and stable operating space.
- Manual removal: Hold the wheel with your hand, press it vertically downward while pulling it outward, and use the deformation of the snap ring to make it detach from the metal sleeve of the chair leg. If manual operation is difficult, you can use tools for assistance:
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the tip of an old key to gently press against the inner side of the snap ring through the side gap of the wheel to help release it.
- After placing a soft cloth, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the edge of the snap to avoid scratching the chair leg.
Threaded (screw-post) Casters
- Flip the chair: Also, turn the chair upside down so that the seat faces downward.
- Rotational removal: Rotate the wheel counterclockwise directly to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the base of the chair leg. If the thread is tight, use a small wrench to turn it to the left to loosen the thread.
Handling special situations
- Rust or deformation causing jamming:
- Spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) into the joint between the wheel and the chair leg, wait a few minutes for it to penetrate, and then use needle-nose pliers to hold the root of the wheel axle and gently shake it left and right while trying to pull it outward.
- Align the opening of large scissors or needle-nose pliers with the joint, gently pry it up and down, and rotate the wheel counterclockwise.
- Use needle-nose vise-grip pliers to hold the joint between the wheel and the chair, find a fulcrum, and pry it outward while rotating it counterclockwise. If the wheel axle and the plastic part fall apart, hold the upper part of the ring and use the ring as a fulcrum to continue prying.
Precautions
- Gas cylinder safety: Do not disassemble the gas cylinder. It is filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. Hammering, hard prying with tools, or heating may cause gas leakage or even cylinder explosion.
- Operating environment: The operation should be carried out on a flat and open ground. Clear the items on the chair and keep it away from fire sources and sharp objects.
- Fault handling: If the gas cylinder of the chair has problems such as failure to lift or lower, air leakage, or abnormal noise, it is advisable to contact professional personnel for maintenance first to avoid dangers caused by self-operation.
Correct operation can ensure the safe and efficient removal of casters. If you encounter complex situations, it is recommended to seek professional help.
