Problems with Office Chair Casters
Admin October 19, 2026
If the office chair casters are not working well, targeted solutions can be adopted according to specific problems:

Casters are too slippery
- Replace with casters with locking functions: These casters are equipped with brake locking devices. When you need to fix the position of the chair, push down the locking device, and the chair will basically not move. When you need to move the chair, lift up the locking device to unlock it.
- Use gravity casters: After being subjected to gravity, the internal mechanism of gravity casters will increase the resistance to the left and right rotation of the casters, making it relatively difficult to move the chair and producing less noise.
- Adopt a chair with fixed feet design: This design provides good fixing effects but sacrifices some mobility convenience. It is more suitable for environments with high requirements for chair stability, such as laboratories.
- Place a rough carpet under the chair: By increasing the friction between the chair and the ground, the sliding of the chair can be reduced. This method is suitable for occasions with low requirements for chair fixing.
Casters are stuck
- Disassemble and clean: First, turn the office chair upside down. Hold the caster bracket with your hand and gently pull out the caster outwards (most of them are of a snap-fit design and do not require tools. If it is stuck tightly, you can use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to gently pry the edge of the snap to remove the caster). Then, use tweezers to pick out the long hairs, carpet fibers, and other debris from the gaps of the caster one by one. Be sure to pick along the rotation direction of the caster. Next, use an old toothbrush dipped in a small amount of neutral detergent to gently brush the surface of the caster and the gaps of the bearing to remove residual dust and oil stains. Finally, rinse the caster with water (be careful to avoid getting water into the bearing), dry it with a dry cloth, and let it air dry in a well-ventilated place for 10 minutes. After the caster is dry, drop 1 - 2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment onto the bearing, and rotate the caster by hand to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. Align the caster with the snap of the bracket and gently push it in until you hear a 'click' sound to confirm that it is firmly installed. Finally, turn the office chair back upright and push the chair to test whether the caster moves smoothly. If it is still stuck, check whether there is any remaining debris that has not been cleaned.
- Spray with WD - 40 rust remover: For office chairs that have not been used for a long time, the stuck casters are usually caused by dust accumulation in the bearing. Spraying with WD - 40 rust remover can restore the smoothness of the casters.
Caster selection and adaptation problems
A quieter short-pile carpet is suitable for wide casters with a diameter of more than 5 cm. There are large casters with a size of 65 mm, which are suitable for chairs with relatively large casters. Before choosing casters, you can measure the size of the original chair's casters.
