Office Chair Casters Not Working Well
Problems with office chair casters not working well can be resolved through thorough cleaning, inspection and lubrication, and component replacement. Additionally, taking preventive measures can reduce the recurrence of such issues.

Thorough Cleaning
Turn the office chair upside down and hold the caster bracket with your hand to pull out the casters. Most of them are designed with snap-on mechanisms and do not require tools. If they are tightly stuck, use a flat-head screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap-on part. Use tweezers to remove hair, fibers, and other debris from the gaps between the casters. Be sure to pull in the direction of rotation to avoid tightening the entanglement. Dip an old toothbrush in a small amount of neutral detergent to scrub the surface of the casters and the gaps in the bearings. Then rinse with water, but avoid getting water into the bearings. After wiping dry, let them air dry for 10 minutes. You can also use a vacuum cleaner or a specialized cleaning brush to remove dust and debris from the wheels.
Inspection and Lubrication
After cleaning, rotate the wheels by hand to check for any remaining stuttering. Also, inspect the connection between the wheels and the chair legs for looseness and check if the wheels themselves are misaligned. If the rotation feels dry or there is a friction sound, it indicates a lack of lubrication in the bearings. Apply 1 - 2 drops of office equipment-specific lubricating oil to the bearings. Avoid using cooking oil. Then rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the lubricating oil. You can also apply an appropriate amount of lubricating oil or multi-purpose oil to reduce the friction during wheel rotation.
Component Replacement
If the casters show signs of wear and deformation, loose axles, or other issues that cannot be resolved by simple cleaning and lubrication, they need to be replaced. Most office chair universal casters on the market are of a universal size. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws that secure the casters, replace them with new casters of the matching size, and tighten the screws. Be sure to choose a model with a load-bearing capacity that is the same as or slightly higher than that of the original casters.
Preventive Measures
Choose wheels that match the floor material to avoid placing heavy objects on the casters and prevent bearing deformation. Try not to slide the chair on surfaces with sharp objects or gravel. Regularly (e.g., once every one or two months) clean the gaps between the casters to effectively prevent the recurrence of such problems.
