Office Chair Caster Maintenance

Admin October 22, 2026

Office chair caster maintenance should be carried out systematically from four aspects: daily maintenance, cleaning methods, model selection and adaptation, and replacement and prevention:

I. Daily Maintenance

  1. Regular Cleaning: Clean the hair and fiber debris wrapped around the wheel axles every 1-2 months. Turn the chair upside down (place an old cloth to prevent scratching the floor), use a coin or a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the buckles/screws, remove the wheels, and then use tweezers to pick out the long hair in the gaps in the direction of rotation to avoid aggravating the jamming due to reverse winding. Gently brush the wheel surface and bearings with an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent, rinse with water, wipe dry, and air-dry in a well-ventilated area to prevent rusting.
  2. Avoiding Wear and Tear: Clean the sand particles and hard debris on the ground before moving the chair to prevent scratches on the wheel surface. For hard floors (such as tiles), prioritize PU silent wheels to reduce the risk of wear.
  3. Lubrication Maintenance: After air-drying, drop 1-2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment (or sewing machine oil) at the bearings of the wheels, and rotate the wheels to evenly distribute the oil. Avoid using cooking oil to prevent dust adsorption.

II. Cleaning Methods

  1. Step-by-Step Disassembly: For buckle-type casters, pull them out directly. If they are tightly fastened, use a screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry open the edges of the buckles to avoid scratching the brackets.
  2. Targeted Cleaning: Remove floating dust with a dry cloth or an old toothbrush. For sticky stains, brush the grooves with a 1:20 diluted detergent solution. For stubborn oil stains, soften them with a cotton swab dipped in medical alcohol. For tangled hair, use an L-shaped waste card or tweezers to pick it out. For rusted wheel axles, spray WD-40 lubricant and then deal with them.
  3. Drying Treatment: After cleaning, use a hairdryer on the cool air setting to dry the wheels to prevent rusting of metal parts.

III. Model Selection and Adaptation

  1. Floor Adaptation: For tile/hard floors, choose PU silent wheels (noise reduction and scratch prevention). For carpets, choose large-diameter nylon wheels (reducing resistance). For wooden floors, choose PU soft wheels (avoiding scratches).
  2. Selection Basis: Refer to the QB/T 2280-2016 standard, paying attention to wear resistance, rolling resistance, and impact resistance. A wheel diameter of 50-60mm is appropriate. The larger the diameter, the easier it is to cross obstacles. The impact resistance should ensure that there is no looseness or functional damage after impact.

IV. Replacement and Prevention

  1. Timely Replacement: When the casters make abnormal noises or roll poorly, contact the supplier to replace them with the same model. For hard plastic wheels that have been used for more than 3 years or have severely worn non-slip patterns, it is recommended to replace them with new nylon wheels (which are quieter and more stain-resistant).
  2. Daily Prevention: Users with long hair should clean the wheels every 1-2 months. Avoid placing heavy objects on the casters to prevent bearing deformation. For leather office chairs, use anti-rust spray to maintain the wheels during the rainy season.
