Installation of Casters on Office Chairs
Admin October 13, 2026
Installing casters on an office chair typically requires preparing components and following installation steps. You can choose the type of caster based on your needs, with low cost and relatively simple operation.

I. Required Components and Costs
The core component for installing casters is the caster itself. Generally, five casters are needed to match the five-star base structure of the office chair. The choice of caster should be determined according to actual needs:
- Swivel Casters: These can rotate 360 degrees and are suitable for scenarios that require frequent changes in direction, such as when you need to move the chair in multiple angles while working.
- Fixed Casters: These can only roll forward and backward and are suitable for scenarios where linear movement is predominant, such as in narrow aisles or on fixed paths.
The cost of casters is relatively low, with each caster typically costing only a few yuan. They can be purchased at hardware stores or online shopping platforms. If the original five-star base (the five-claw structure that supports the casters) of the office chair is intact, no additional components need to be purchased. If the five-star base is damaged, it needs to be replaced simultaneously, which will increase the cost accordingly.
II. Installation Steps
- Prepare Tools and Components: Confirm the number (usually five) and type of casters, and check whether the five-star base is intact. If you need to remove the original fixed feet (such as plastic or metal feet without casters), you can prepare tools like screwdrivers to assist.
- Install Casters onto the Five-Star Base: Align the stem of each caster with the hole on the five-star base, press down vertically with force, and hear a 'click' sound or feel that the caster is firmly fixed to complete the installation of a single caster. Repeat this step until all five casters are installed.
- Check Stability: After installation, invert the chair or gently shake the five-star base to confirm that all casters are free from looseness, wobbling, or detachment. If you find that a caster is not installed tightly, you can press it down again or check whether the hole is blocked by foreign objects.
III. Precautions
- Caster-Floor Compatibility: If the floor is carpeted, it is recommended to choose casters with a larger wheel diameter (such as over 5 centimeters) to reduce moving resistance. For smooth floors, ordinary casters will suffice.
- Load-Bearing Limit: When purchasing casters, confirm their load-bearing range. Generally, the load-bearing capacity of office chair casters is around 100-150 kilograms. Overloading may cause the casters to be damaged or the chair to tip over.
- Safety Test: Before using the chair for the first time after installation, it is recommended to gently push the chair on a flat surface and observe whether the casters roll smoothly and without any abnormal noises to ensure safety in use.
