Office Chair Caster Installation

Admin October 10, 2026

The steps for installing casters on an office chair are as follows:

I. Prepare Tools Select tools based on the type of caster:

  • Quick-release snap-ring casters: No tools required; can be installed by hand.
  • Screw-fixed casters: Require a Phillips screwdriver or hex wrench.
  • Swivel casters with threaded rods: Require a wrench for tightening.
  • General tools: Rubber mallet (for assisting with insertion), lubricant (for post-installation adjustment).

II. Flip the Chair Place the chair upside down steadily, ensuring the five-star base or pedestal is facing up. Make sure the working surface is stable to prevent the chair from sliding or tipping over.

III. Remove Old Casters (Only if replacement is needed)

  1. Screw-fixed type:
    • Locate the fixing screw at the center or side of the caster. Use the corresponding screwdriver or wrench to turn it counterclockwise and remove the caster.
  2. Snap-ring type:
    • Use your fingernail, a small screwdriver, or the edge of a key to gently pry open the metal snap-ring at the base of the caster stem. At the same time, pull out the caster.
    • Note: Control the force during operation to prevent the snap-ring from flying off and causing injury.

IV. Install New Casters

  1. Snap-ring quick-release casters:
    • Align the new caster stem with the installation hole on the five-star base. Press down vertically with force. A clicking sound indicates that the snap-ring has popped open and the caster is in place.
  2. Swivel casters with threaded rods:
    • Align the caster's threaded rod with the threaded hole on the base. Turn it clockwise to screw it in. Tighten it by hand first, and then use a wrench to secure it. Avoid excessive force to prevent damage to the hole.
  3. General insertion-type casters:
    • Insert the caster stem into the hole on the five-star base. Press down firmly to ensure it is fully seated.

V. Post-Installation Inspection and Adjustment

  1. Stability check:
    • Flip the chair back over and check each caster one by one to ensure they are installed firmly with no looseness or wobbling.
  2. Rotation test:
    • Push and rotate the chair to confirm that the casters rotate smoothly without any jamming or abnormal noises.
  3. Levelness adjustment:
    • Observe whether the chair is level. If there is any tilt, readjust the installation position of the casters.
  4. Lubrication and maintenance:
    • If the rotation is stiff, apply a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to the caster bearings to reduce friction.

Tip: Before installation, confirm that the caster model is compatible with the chair to avoid installation failure or damage to components due to size mismatch.
