Office Chair Caster Height Increase

Admin October 14, 2026

The height of office chair casters can be increased using dedicated height-increasing pads or by replacing the gas lift with a longer one, but strict safety guidelines must be followed.

I. Height-Increasing Methods and Applicable Scenarios

  1. Dedicated Swivel Chair Height-Increasing Pads

    • Material and Specifications: Typically made of rubber or nylon, with a thickness of 2-5cm. The bottom is designed with anti-slip patterns to fit most caster sizes.
    • Installation Method: Simply place them on the contact surface between the chair legs and the ground, without the need to disassemble existing components. Suitable for temporary height-increasing needs.
    • Limitations: Increasing the height by more than 5cm may cause the seat to wobble more significantly, increasing the risk of tipping over. Use scenarios should be carefully evaluated.
  2. Replacing with a Longer Gas Lift

    • Specification Matching: Choose a longer gas lift (e.g., 50cm) based on the length of the original gas lift (e.g., 45cm), and confirm whether the base hole diameter (commonly 11mm) is compatible.
    • Professional Operation: It is recommended to contact an office furniture store or manufacturer for replacement to avoid mismatches between the gas lift and the chassis buckle due to self-modification, which could lead to safety hazards.

II. Core Principles for Height Increase

  1. Height Limitation: The height increase in a single adjustment should not exceed 8cm. If a higher adjustment is required, the chassis structure needs to be redesigned to distribute pressure; otherwise, tipping over may occur due to instability of the center of gravity.
  2. Usage Testing: After modification, test whether the gap between the armrests and the desktop remains at 3-5cm when the seat is tilted forward by 15 degrees. If the gap is too small, it may restrict arm movement; if it is too large, it may cause excessive forward leaning of the body, increasing lumbar pressure.
  3. Safety Inspection:
    • Gas Lift Status: Regularly check for slow settling. If detected, replace it immediately, as it indicates that nitrogen leakage inside has affected support stability.
    • Lifespan Management: The lifespan of most ergonomic swivel chair gas lifts is 5-8 years. It is recommended to apply lubricating grease at the metal bracket connections every six months to reduce wear.

III. Safety Precautions

  • Component Certification: When purchasing third-party height-increasing components, check for TUV or BIFMA certification marks to avoid using products that do not meet ISO standards (common in cheap swivel chairs) and prevent risks such as gas lift explosions.
  • Daily Maintenance: Avoid vigorous shaking or jumping on the height-increased seat. Regularly check whether the casters are stuck or whether the height-increasing pads have shifted to ensure safety during use.
