Disassembly of Office Chair Casters
Admin October 12, 2026
The disassembly method for office chair casters should be selected based on the type of caster, with common types and operations as follows:

I. Disassembly of Snap-Ring (Quick-Release) Casters
- Manual Operation: Hold the wheel with your hand, press it vertically downward while pulling it outward, utilizing the elastic deformation of the snap ring to release it from the metal sleeve of the chair leg. This method is suitable for snap rings with good elasticity and no rust.
- Tool Assistance: If manual operation is strenuous, insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver or an old key into the side gap of the wheel, pressing against the inner side of the snap ring to assist in loosening. Control the force during operation to avoid scratching the wheel or the metal sleeve.
II. Disassembly of Threaded (Screw-Post) Casters
- Regular Rotation: Rotate the wheel counterclockwise directly to unscrew it from the threaded hole in the base of the chair leg. This method is suitable for casters with non-rusted threads and loose connections.
- Rust Treatment: If the caster is stuck due to rust, first spray a lubricant (such as WD-40) onto the joint, allow it to penetrate for 5-10 minutes, then use needle-nose pliers to grip the base of the wheel shaft and shake it left and right while attempting to pull it outward; or use large scissors/needle-nose pliers to pry at the edge of the joint, prying while rotating counterclockwise to gradually separate the caster.
III. Disassembly of Groove-Fixed Casters
- Flip the Chair: Turn the chair upside down so that the casters are facing upward for easier operation.
- Knock to Release: Hold the bracket firmly with your hand and repeatedly knock on the connection point between the wheel and the bracket (such as the edge of the groove) with a hammer, using the vibration to loosen the fixed structure. Knock several times until it falls off. Control the force during knocking to avoid damaging the bracket.
Precautions
- Safe Operation: Before disassembly, clear all items from the chair, operate on a flat surface, and keep away from fire sources and sharp objects to prevent accidental injury.
- Pneumatic Rod Prohibition: If the chair is equipped with a pneumatic height-adjustment rod, do not disassemble the pneumatic rod. Simply flip the chair to operate on the caster part to avoid the risk of high-pressure gas leakage.
- Cleaning and Maintenance: After disassembly, use a cloth to clean dust and debris from the installation hole in the chair leg to prevent the new caster from becoming loose or making noise due to foreign objects during installation.
Tip: If the caster is severely damaged or difficult to disassemble, it is recommended to directly replace it with a new caster (matching the original chair leg model) to avoid damaging the chair leg or wheel shaft through forced disassembly.
