Disassembly of Office Chair Casters

Admin October 10, 2026

The methods for disassembling office chair casters are as follows:

Common Disassembly Methods

  • Direct Pull or Rotational Pull: Most office chair casters are designed with a plug-in mechanism, where the base and the wheel are fixed together using metal or plastic clips. Pulling straight up vertically is the basic method. You can step on the edge of the chair base with your foot to hold it steady and grasp the caster with both hands, pulling straight up. If you encounter resistance, you can gently shake it from side to side to assist. Some casters have an internal threaded structure and need to be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise to unlock the thread before being pulled out.
  • Rod Insertion Type: For rod-insertion-type wheels, you can directly pull them out. If direct force is ineffective, you can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open the plastic clip under the wheel, separating the rod from the base. If you lack strength, you can use pliers to grip the rod and tap it lightly with a hammer, or directly tap the rod with pliers.
  • Screw-Fixed Type: If the wheel is fixed with screws, you need to use a long, thin Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws for disassembly.

Disassembly Using Tools

  • Basic Tools: Prepare a wrench, a Phillips screwdriver, and a rubber mallet. Turn the chair upside down so that the bottom is facing up. Use the wrench to unscrew the screws on the bottom gasket and separate the middle pull rod of the chair from the base (be careful to turn the screws gently to avoid damaging the threads). Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the small screws on the wheels, then use the rubber mallet to gently tap the connection between the wheels and the chair to loosen them. If the wheels are tightly fixed, you can tap them several times before unscrewing.
  • Auxiliary Tools: Use needle-nose pliers to pry between the wheels to help separate the clips. If the friction between the wheels and the base is severe, you can apply hydraulic oil or WD-40 lubricant to the connection and let it sit for 15 minutes before attempting disassembly.

Handling Special Cases

  • Stubborn Casters: If the wheel cannot be disassembled due to rust or tight clips, you can spray WD-40 lubricant onto the seam and let it sit for 15 minutes before trying again.
  • Rusted Metal Clips: Avoid using metal tools to pry forcefully. Instead, use a rubber mallet to gently tap around the connection to loosen it and prevent damage to the base.

Operation Precautions

  • Protective Measures: Wear cotton gloves to increase friction and prevent slipping. Lay a soft cloth on the ground to prevent the wheels from bouncing and scratching the floor.
  • Check the Structure: Check in advance whether there are fixed screws at the junction of the caster and the base (common in high-end gaming chairs). Before disassembly, check whether the screws on the bottom gasket are loose and tighten them to ensure stability.
  • In-Depth Observation: The slot depth of casters from different brands is 2-4 cm. Some have anti-drop designs. When disassembling, confirm whether the metal rod is completely pulled out to avoid residual clips.
  • Thread Protection: When disassembling cylindrical wheels, pay attention to the threads on the middle pull rod of the chair to avoid damaging them when unscrewing.
